Melee with a mage?? Blasphemy!! This character has yet to hit *anything*. Touching filthy monsters is definitely beneath me ;-)

I did check out the weaponsmith and I am 5% to hit accross the board (excepting 0 AC of course) when single wielding Hagen. And that is with Cambeleg helping out.

No, I think I better stick to my 0% fail 100hp damage holy orb for 8sp ...

Stupid Giant Headless swapped my stats around (Freakish Metamorphosis). I hate that ... but even worse, my race got changed as well while attempting to get things swapped back. In the end, I ended up as a Dunadan with my Int and Con back to decent levels. In the long run, this is probably a beneficial change, especially since I went to the Vapor Quest to pick up Telepathy (and got Resilience to boot!). The net effect is +5 Con from my race change (+3 vs. -2) and +4 Con from my mutation. +9 Con overall is a pretty decent boost :-)

Hionhurn's Gifts: Berserker Mutation, Augmentation and Rohirrim.

But check out that Super helm I am wearing. The funny thing is, if it had only been, say 80% off, I could not have afforded it. Very nice :-)

So I have killed Gachapin and the Queen Ant. Still, I better really hold off on the Cloning Pits. Characters who cannot melee had better be really, really cautious! (And remember to pick up Levitation somewhere ...) I could really use some more speed, though. Scatha was tough at only +3 speed.

Nothing new from Hionhurn the last few levels. Thank goodness for the Earthquake mutation or probably I would have missed many more artifacts than I have. As it stands, I am 5 artifacts missed so far (out of 35), but nothing noteworthy yet (Arvedui, Phial, Boromir, Tetsu-geta and Orcrist). But while facing down a *greater* pattern vault with all sorts of out of depth nasties (Spectral Wyrm, Mouth of Sauron, etc), I plucked a +13 Ring of Speed from Kavlax's feeble body. Very nice. A +8 Ring of Speed shortly followed, but the current config is giving all resistances with ample haste.

Now, I am starting to hope for the 4th book. I would still consider it early at this point, but so far I have found the 4th Trump, Bard, Craft, Sorcery and now Demon books (in that order). It can take a *long* time to find a required book, and that is a really frustrating thing (I've had characters win the game without finding their 4th books ;-P), but lets hope for some luck. I can tell you flat out that this character will *not* win without the help of some Divine Intervention (definitely the best spell in the whole game ...). I'm running the towns hoping to buy Wrath of God (That's how I got the 3rd book, btw).

In the mean time, my offense is (all 0% fail):
[1] Holy Orb (141 avg damage to evil for 8sp)
[2] Judgment Thunder (200 damage lightning for 21sp)
[3] Starburst (180 damage light for 26sp).

But Holy Word is frustratingly difficult to cast (28% failure which in practice means 3 or 4 failures in a row when you really *need* it). Don't know why that spell is so hard ...

Ran into Morgoth recently ... at DL62. ???? Wow! But it was a checkerboard vault (the good kind) that had Anabasis, Fingolfin and Terror Mask. Good thing Morgy is easily out smarted ;-). For a mage, I like Anabasis. Fire immunity and reflection are very nice.

So now I am stealthy (Legendary 7), fast (+25 base), resistant (all!) and have economical mana. What is missing from this otherwise very fine build? Hmmm ...

(CL44:DL95 R'lyeh)
4 more 4th level books ... I noticed that all the books I had found where the 90/3 variety, and that Wrath of God is a level 95 object. So, off to R'lyeh I go. Wow, talk about being overwhelmingly overpowered! I could kill maybe 1 in 10 monsters that I saw, and survived only by liberal *Destruction*, recalling out when my 20 charges ran out. I lost the Necklace of the Dwarves, because even though I knew exactly where it was, I just could not get to it. Several Chemist sightings and even a Unicorn sighting ... Dangerous stuff. (Just try surviving on Holy Orb against Star Spawns ... It aint fun :-)

But there at last, laying on the ground (right next to a Nature's Wrath, so does this count as my 10th or 11th book??), was the Wrath of God. Probably, I need to switch back to a wizard staff and my super dragon helm. Also, back to DL72 in the Dragon's Lair to give my character's ego ample time to heal ;-)

But dual wielding shields was interesting. Perhaps if I can score Incanus, I can go back to this approach ...

It never occured to me to dual-wield shields. Might try that with my Sorcerer since his melee offense is beyond helpless.

Finished R'lyeh in style. The Destroyer was a complete pushover. The only thing it was able to do to me was consume about 20 minutes of my time ;-) I never took a single point of damage the entire battle, and not many characters can boast that. So feeling good, I chased down Great Cthulhu and found him very easy as well. He dropped Songmaster and another Wrath of God.

But as powerful as I feel against evil monsters, I am quite ineffective against the good guys. I would ordinarily not be able to take down Kenshirou, but I had just honed my Crusade strategy vs. the Destroyer, and the same worked for him. But give me Raphael, Azriel, Uriel, Bahamut, the Unicorn or the Chemist, and really, I don't know what I could possibly do. I could try to Crusade, but I don't think that will work vs. summoners. And if the opponent resists light, than, well, I have no offense ;-) Well, there is always Armageddon ...

So time to move back to Angband, and push to DL99. I think my equipment and resources are adequate for the final battle, and I just need to prune the tree of available uniques before attempting the Serpent.

It dawns on my that Eye for an Eye might help out against the good guys. I'll probably give this a go against Bahamut, since he is a wanted monster ...

OMG! The ... Serpent ... is ... not .... evil????! Holy Cow! No wonder in Hengband 1.70 and Entroband, the Serpent now summons good guys. I mean, I've killed the Serpent maybe 20 times in Entro and have failed to notice this small tidbit??

Well this was a rude awakening, to say the least. Prepared for an easy ego boosting total domination on my part, I am instead reduced to a whimpering pup, dishing out maybe 300hp of damage per round. Except for Eye for an Eye. Probably, this was the only reason I was successful. I kept the aura up at all times, even if I was just going to heal.

And heal I did. *Alot*. 40-50!oHealing. 15-20!o*Healing*. 3!oLife. 20!oRestore Mana (I used my mana to heal as well with Holy Word). But still plenty to spare ;-)

Hmmmm ... so now the Serpent is immune to *all* slays on any weapon. I wonder what is best these days? How could I not notice this until now? Am I a fool? Has anybody else failed to make this very important observation?

Well, anyway, Crusade was probably not so wise a choice after all for a High Mage, but still, it is a very powerful realm. And powerful enough to win with, it seems :-)

Whoa... I never noticed that either. I never was diligent enough to use Probing very often, and after I learned the properties of most of the monsters, I completely stopped. I remember Serpent always seemed to take a little longer than I would expected from doing numbers, but I always attributed that to super-fast regen.

Just went back and checked a couple character memories and... by golly, he's right. I'm embarassed to admit I didn't notice it either. When on earth did THAT change happen?
