Been awhile since i played Entroband, so i've gotten pretty sick of my magic-classes that died early, had a few promising Level 30 Archers, but all died to some stupidity, and farming seeker Arrows is something which gets REALLY annoying for the 20th time.

So i started playing Cavalry, something which i was always interested in, but always had problems starting out with. It seems like before level 20 it is really hard to find a good mount that doesnt throw you down every other turn. Also Riding skill goes up very slowly, had a few near death encounters, but just went on mountless till around level 20, then i found some magical figurines of 2 headed Wyverns, which were a perfect mount to start off with.

Ever since then Loewe has become quite the killing machine: awesome randart cloak with reflect and sense evil, gives me a near perfect, telepathy substitute, Cloning Pits (used a Ethereal Dragon and Sting) was quite the breeze, was at +21 hasted speed, cleared everything but the chaos breathers, then switched to Stormcaller and finished the rest up (for res chaos). Got Grayswandir (my current weapon) and Amulet of Faramir/Boromir out of it. Life Rating 18/99 and Con cap auf 18/70, so i might try my luck with a potion of New Life once i find one.

Anyway: about riding, there seems to be a few issues with it, that i don't quite understand, the whole evolving thing is very nice, but once you store a pet in a capture ball all the so far earned experience is lost. Also my current mount has +12 speed (when probed) but when mounted i have +13 speed (Riding skill: Expert), is that a bug? seems weird at least. Also my ring of Extra-Attacks+1 does NOT give me an extra attack (mounted and unmounted), ring of Slaying doesn't up my damage either, or at least no change shown in the character screen... hmm wonder if i have a bugged version :P

Small update: Managed to get to Level 40, still using an Ancient Multi-Hued Dragon with +12 speed (but effectively having +14 now), JUST found a potion of New Life as well, and went from 99/100 to 110/100 and 18/70 con to 18/110, so very very happy now :) I think this is my first character ever to level 40 (short of berserkers maybe)

Keep up the good work. I had problems taming high end uniques in my tiny wiz-test-mode test a year ago. No idea of the end reality of whether it's possible or not, but I found it just about impossible. I think I was testing out what beastmaster could do or not do at the time.

Sitting at a comfortable 914 HP with 18/198 CON at level 44, just found Terror Mask and decided to give up my randart Helm with Reflect, for the big Damage Boost Terror Mask provides + Anti Magic, also swapped a Ring of Shard Resistance with Ring of Extra Attacks (for some reason it works now.. :p) leaving me with open resist to light (don't think it can bother me with 914 HP, and open resist to shards (max damage from a (unresisted) shard breath is 500, also helps with rockets though, maybe i ll switch it back)...

As for riding, i've finally hit !Master Riding and it seems that !Master flat out gives +3 Speed on riding any mount, so that explains the extra speed, using a Great Venom Wyrm (+12) at the moment, it has a boatload of Health and it can dish out some wicked (poison) breath attacks, so it's rather nice. Still i want a self-hasting pet soon, time to go hunt for Lord of Changes :)

My current weapon is still 'Grayswandir' which seems really hard to replace, cause it is just VERY awesome, it pretty much has all interesting slays, decent dmg, +4 to all important stats.. i wonder if i can EVER replace it heh..

on a sidenote, i want to exchange Faramirs amulet with Boromirs but i CANT cause i ll lose resist blindness, i can't believe i dont have another source of res blindness yet.. NOT EVEN A RING.. (RNG taunting me).. ah well i guess it will come in time.

Killed a bunch of Mobs in the Arena too, Greater Titan fell easily, so i guess it's time soon for The Great Castle (although GaeBolg seems to be an utter joke compared to my current weapon :)

About Spectre's: Yep, they are a very powerful race.. too bad their HP pool is so tiny, i lost count on my Spectre Archers/High Mages that i have lost, actually i prefer very stealthy races, but seems like i can't cope with the really low HP. So i've been looking for alternative Stealth races, been doing Vampires for a long time, very powerful too, but now i just do Kutars, RES CONF, and a rather good Self-Stoneskin and very high stealth bonus make them pretty easy to start with and 50 AC comes in handy often against heavy meleers

Gae Bolg is pretty much same damage vs Grayswandir, but i give up alot of CON, so i ll stick with the sword.. beside that: only 2 Artifacts in the Castle, Isildur and yet another shield which Cavalry can't really use

Some early questions you had:
[1] Ring of extra attacks and slaying will work, but they need to be on the correct hand to have any effect. Since you are riding, you are using one hand to control your mount (well, at least most of the time you should be ;-). Make sure the ring is on the same arm as your weapon and it will work.

[2] You figured out the speed boost. +5 in all ... I think this was done to rebalance the fact that scumming your pet's summons for high speed mounts was completely removed in Hengband 1.7.0 (vs. 1.6.2).

[3] Lords of Change are indeed great mounts. But beware, they are not tough enough to survive vs. the Unicorn, the Serpent and Nodens. Not sure about Morgoth or the Destroyer even ... Carry a backup. Otherwise, you might need to chuck some potions of *Healing* against a wall to keep your steed from dying! I had Nodens kill my Lord of Change with a Mana Storm, which brought me from +43 speed to +8 speed. In the same turn, Nodens got *three* additional moves to wipe out my 1100+ hp easily. A quadruple move death, but it was really my fault ... :(
