Sold the Whip of Something for a cool 17,500 gp which I used to stock up for my quick death :) Used the TL trick to get to Amon Rudh so place your bets on what will kill me. Just kidding, good luck. I haven't tried necromancers before, but I suspect that extreme cowardice is called for-- that has been my m.o. for mages in V. Actually, it is pretty much my m.o. for all serious *banding these days. I myself have found that being able to detect/escape (mostly TA in V) that I get very frustrated playing warriors (only class I did not have success in V). After Cuddle though, I have plans to try at least one warrior, may Middle Earth shudder at the furry feet of--- Cuddle Fu.

Identify and some other useful stuff are in the first dungeon book, and better detection in the third, but you never get recall. Break Curse can be used as a sort of weak pseudo-id. The joy of playing a necro is the sheer destructive power of the spells, but as Dean said you need to be prepared to run away.
