I decided to give a gnomish mage a try. So far I've been surviving well, but I feel my equipment is a little lacking, and some hounds are really a threat. Loitering around dlevels 19-20 doesn't seem to be very rewarding experience - at best I only find pieces of equipment I won't be using, and then I sell them and when I have gathered enough money, I use it in the black market to buy stat gain -potions, which feels quite expensive considering that later on I could find all the stat gain potions I need from the dungeon floor.
