Demonbear has progressed with blistering speed, thanks to Eequor rewarding him with Augmentation 3 times before level 12 (and zero times after, though he maxed CON at clevel 30 and STR at clevel 34) and with Experience 3 times after level 20 (plus he found an actual potion of experience). The play time is artificially high. Real play time is probably between 4 and 5 hours, which is by far my fastest time getting to this point of the game. Just waiting for rChaos before entering the Cloning Pits.

Demonbear's weaponry is a testiment to the fact that scrolls of acquisition really can be useful every once in a while. After running around for a while with a scimitar of burning he got off Farmer Maggot, Demonbear killed the Ogre Shaman in the arena and went to the Dragon Lair to cash it in. The scroll gave him Ulmo, which was pretty darn nice of it. Usually that scroll gives some chainmail of rAcid, though I once had a character get the Metal Scalemail of Julian, and he went on to be my only winner, so we'll see.

After getting Zantetsuken in the usual fashion, Demonbear is taking a shot at duel-wielding, something I've never had a character do with any success. So far, so good.

Solution: I rolled up a Beastman Beastmaster and waited for him to start with 'Chaos Patron' mutation - Only took about 20 characters before I got it and to top it off he hit the jackpot with 'Hionhurn'. He's only chlvl 5 (ie killed thieves and he's been Augmented twice and had str and cha boosted and been ignored once - he's now got three attacks. It took me till mid twenties with previous standard Beastmaster - so thanks for the idea Elliot.

I'm going to try and be really careful with him so I can post him later - 'Beastlord'.

Demonbear (who was using his last speed potion and was out of teleport scrolls) charged straight through the summons, killed Malekith, used his rods to teleport away the nastier stuff, and mopped up the rest. When the smoke cleared, Demonbear was surprisngly still alive (though with <100 HP left) and out of healing and *healing* potions. Sadly, a roaming hydra burned up Demonbear's hidden cache of ID scrolls, so if he made it, the treasure sorting would all be via pseudo-ID. Even more frustrating was that the Stone of Lore appeared, but since he couldn't ID it, he couldn't use it to ID other things.

Demonbear then tracked down the Gachapins and the various other scattered summons. One Gachapin was easy, but the second decided to just sit there and summon without moving. Extremely aggravating, plus Demonbear was down to using Elven bread for healing. Finally, I figured out the problem (I was within his LoS, but outside his "see enemies" range, so he could cast spells, but wouldn't pursue), and managed to kill him with the seeker arrows Demonbear had been hoarding.

Once everything else had been cleared out, Demonbear went after the Stormbringer. Fortunately, it doesn't resist teleportation, or he'd have been dead long ago. Demonbear just picked at it with arrows and then teleported it away when it got close. That thing is vicious in melee, but the strategy worked.

It was one of the two or three hardest fights I've ever had been in Hengband.

Failing Shuten-Douji wasn't terribly unexpected, not because the Ogre is so tough (well, he's tough, but Demonbear probably could have handled him), but because before he even saw the Ogre, he had to kill Judge Fear, Judge Death, Dwar, Lord Borel, and one of the mid-40s Cthulu ones (except for the top few they all kinda blend together for me) and some significant (for the level, anyway) undead like an Iron Lich and a few dracoliches. By the time he got to the Ogre, most of his supplies were gone and his pack was full. Demonbear gave it one shot, and when it didn't work, it was time to go.

Failing Thuringwethil, on the other hand, was deeply aggravating. It was a pretty boring level, with Thuringwethil the only dangerous creature on the level. When Demonbear finally engaged Thuringwethil, however, he discovered that something had cursed Zantetsuken, he didn't have any means of removing curse, and there wasn't a remove curse scroll on the entire level (he explored the whole thing and killed everything else on the level).

Demonbear was dual wielding, but Zantetsuken's... lack of appropriateness for fighting Thuringwethil applied to all his melee attacks, not just the ones with Zantetsuken. Since he couldn't take it off, and there was no way he'd do enough damage with missle weapons or spells to win the battle, Demonbear was forced to fail the quest in ignomious fashion.

Finally, I just got tired and since he had just found a (special) 4d5 longsword, I was pretty eager to just bail and *ID* it. Chasing Bleys, I was sure the sword would end up being Ringil, but I'd find out by looking at the dump after something killed him as he chased Bleys.

Tried playing with various double wielding combos. Stormbringer+Zarcuthra is kinda fun, and while aggravate isn't quite as bad as I remembered, its still really annoying not to be able to sneak up on ANYTHING. Stormbringer is awesome against humans, but kinda overrated against anything else. Zarcutha is awesome, but really too heavy to dual wield. Currently going with Ringil+Zantetsuken, though I'd love to swap out Zantetsuken on general principles.

Anyway, it was a good fight, but Habu beat him fair and square. Habu was down to maybe 5 stars and Demonbear was down to perhaps 450 hp when Habu got a double move and used it to mana storm and then psycho-spear. Game over, man. Game over.
