It seems likely that this character will have gotten significantly on with her life (or, more likely, death) by the time I see any comments, but I'm dithering between keeping my current (unimpressive) pistol, in which I have numerous skill points, or switching to using the Shotgun in my home, which does significantly more damage.

Well, sometimes people respond quickly.

Ah, the great dilemma of the officer. Stick with the pistol that does minimal damage, but you can invest skill points into, or wield a shotgun which will absolutely mow things down, but you can't get skill in it.

One thing to consider is that by the time the end-game rolls around, you'll probably be a melee character who uses a pistol for utility (softening up incoming opponents, finishing off the fleeing wounded, etc.), because the pistol won't do enough damage to warrant a larger role, and you'll have serious trouble hitting Panther Tanks with even a great shotgun having 0 skill in it.

I'd consider pumping melee and hoping a nice sword drops in your lap.

It wasn't so much that I didn't think I'd get any comments in relatively short order on it as that I didn't have internet access over the weekend :-/

I went with the Shotgun for a couple of trips until I lucked into the Mace at 1700', at which point I went from running for my life from everything to kicking serious butt, and I haven't really stopped (though I assume the monsters will get awkward again sooner or later). This dump is just coming out of the largest vault I've ever seen, at 1300'. I had to leave behind a few books and the Hammer of John Henry, though in review I think I should've ditched Arbaces and probably the Petticoats as well to make room for other stuff.

As you say, I'll want to switch over to a sword at some point, but at the moment I'm pretty sure Ramses is doing way more damage than anything else I've seen...

Umm, wow. That mace is one of the better weapons in the game (that I've seen, anyway). I'd ride it until either, A) You just can't anything with it anymore, or B) You find an absolutely butt-kicking sword (a pneumatic sword of melting or Tesla's cavalry sabre or something). There's at least a 1/3 chance that you use that mace through the end of the game.

My first winner mugged Nellie Bly in town at level 1 and she dropped a great billy club of combat that he was still using down to about 600-700'. Sometimes it happens.

I've never found those petticoats before, so I don't know what they do, but Arbaces, though nice for a spellcaster, isn't really that great for a fighter-type. The books or the hammer might have been better. Oh well.

Have you tried using that amulet of *regeneration* in combat yet? Regeneration is, umm... useful in Steamband and *Regeneration* even more so.

On 1.3.2005 03:55 aps@cs.hmc.edu wrote:
Yes, I was wearing the *Regen* until I found the Pectoral. I was wearing the Petticoats for the 25% regen they provide, but the Trousers appear to be strictly better given that I have intrinsic fear resistance (they give 50% regen). I suppose I could try swapping the Pectoral for the *Regen* and the Trousers out for the Bull's Tail, but that also takes a significant chunk out of my resistances (and I have to give up hold life).

I had figured on probably selling Arbaces, and I don't see too many reasons to keep the Bowler either. The Crown seems to be largely spellcaster-oriented, though it's got hold life and at least something else nice, I think...

Not much more to be said here, I don't think. I ran into a couple of Dimensional Etheric Automata, if anyone wonders what happened to my stats. I seem to have gotten the short end of the stick as far as mutations go, but I don't think I can really complain. I'm sure the last 500' are going to have some surprises, but Nazi SS guys aren't one of them...

Dr. Moreau was a big wuss. I actually had to do the endgame twice; the first time I had taken some damage off of Fu Manchu but then had to teleport out; I then, without thinking about it, activated the Bull's Tail and ran into the storm-moves-items-in-area-with-walls bug and locked the game up.

Returning to my last save (back at 250') I was able to manhandle Dr. Moreau (again) and Fu Manchu. The two non-Edison artifact rings dropped from a pack of something-or-other not twenty turns before Fu showed up. He didn't pull any nasty tricks the second time around; I dug a short T-junction corridor (standard ASCs strike me as cheesy; the purpose of this was to prevent my having to chase him out into an open room after knockback triggered) and he didn't give me any problems. I'm curious to see what else he has up his sleeve, but I'll wait for another character to try letting the fight get more interesting.

Congradulations! Very well done. Yeah, crummy luck with those mutations. Kinda funny that you were still using that mace at the end.

Generally, if you can get to Moreau and Fu Manchu, you can kill them. In theory, they can do all sorts of dangerous things (especially Fu Manchu's summon uniques), but in practice you can usually set the battle up such that they don't get many chances to use their best tricks or you can just overwhelm them.

That having been said, Steamband still hasn't been beaten by a lot of folks, so you have reason to be proud.
