Imitator is interesting. First, they are decent melee fighters (at least mine was) so you can play the game that way.

Their special ability is to mimic the special abilities of monsters they encounter, but only immediately after (or within a couple turns, perhaps) seeing that ability used (I don't believe it's necessary for the monster to use the ability on *you*--for instance, I was able to blink-self after seeing a novice mage do the same).

One flaw that I can see at the higher levels is that the monster that uses the attack on you is probably immune or resistant to their own attack--so for instance you may be able to breath fire right back at that Fire Hound, but it might not do you much good. However, if you get in big mixups with a variety of monsters, you may be able to find suitable targets for the attacks you can mimic.

What you can mimic is governed by level, so for instance you can't mimic the "Summon Uniques" ability of a monster until you are 50th level. The summoning mimicry is probably one of the more powerful aspects once you reach a suitable level--fighting summoners with comparable summons of your own is definitely a worthwhile tactic.

Alas, I was trying to counter Orfax' slow with a counterslow, and just didn't heed the dark elf mage with his stinking cloud at ready, etc etc. Just didn't have the defense to really put myself in the thick of it hoping to get some good mimicry in.

Interesting class in which I am sure a better player may be able to find some challenge.

Also, I'm spoiled by classes with decent pseudo-ID--the Imitator seems to be completely lacking any such thing, at least through 13th level, so ID scrolls and such are going to be a necessary investment.
