Beyond basically letting you pick and choose your fights forever, if you entomb entire areas in walls (view-wall creation or area-wall creation) and then dig out a single hole, then area-whatever spells will ALL hit that exact square. Some elements are insane too, like water or mana just aren't resisted by anything.

Another good trick is ... force? I think is the element? Yeah, it knocks things back, but if they can't go back, it does triple damage. And if you have a beam version of it, each tick of the beam IIRC counts as another cast if they can't go back early on.

I did go Warper in my run instead of Thaumaturgist specifically, tho. The skill points added up better that way, IIRC.

As far as elements go, Mitchell mostly used inertia which very few monsters resist and can slow down enemies *permanently*. In TMA's Let's Play, the char lucked into a very high-level area inertia spell ("Black Hole") that just more or less instantly set a monsters' speed to the lowest possible value if paired with wall creation for targetting; Mitchell, on the other hand, was stuck with spells that could apply inertia to monsters once per casting. And yeah mana is a great element that literally nothing resists, but water resistance does exist on monsters (annoyingly, while the player cannot gain that resistance in regular ToME). Water spells are still useful since monsters with that resistance aren't that common :)

Good catch with the force beam spell, don't think I had one with Mitchell but it's a thing to keep in mind for future runs.
