So far I have tried to follow suggestions by clouded: http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=6606#7
During the game I have spent time writing down the game history (in a format somewhat like the auto-history from vanilla Angband). This seems to help me focusing on the game and avoid the worst YASD.
This has been a great run until now. I'm not really sure where I should go next. Forest and Camelot are the most obvious choices, but I am at a point where I don't know what to expect from the levels. Late levels in Icky cave held some nasty surprises. A third choice would be to return to Lonely Mountain and see what it has to offer. Camelot appears to have the greatest loot of the three and I could use some better equipment. There isn't much wiggle room with the items I have at the moment.
On 28.4.2017 18:40 Ironshod Al wrote: By the way, I don't know if you're supposed to one-shot the Minotaur of the Labyrinth. I expected something reminiscent of Baphomet in vanilla.
However, the fight went like this:
You attack The Minotaur of the Labyrinth.
You miss.
You hit.
How heroic!
That was very harmonious.
You have slain The Minotaur of the Labyrinth.
Melee damage was 214 [1.07x] with /DoTU.
On 28.4.2017 19:28 krazyhades wrote: He's pretty squishy, just 500 hp, +15 speed, not much else going on for him. You took him on much later than necessary...one can take him fairly early for that guaranteed rod of recall.
Don't worry, Baphomet is still around and certainly more dangerous than The Minotaur...
On 28.4.2017 19:47 Ironshod Al wrote: Well, that would explain it. I don't have his HP in my monster knowledge yet. Just the speed and the AC.
Anyway, there was a friendly Coatl behind him, that had been damaged, so maybe some of the 500 HP were lost before I joined the battle.
On 29.4.2017 08:12 Ironshod Al wrote: Decided to return to Camelot and fully explore a couple of levels. That was a massive success in terms of equipment.
Thranduil, The Spear of Hagen and "Magi (mostly for sInv).
Also got 'Aranruth'. Much more damage, but swap +3 speed for levitation. Probably worth using for Lonely Mountain.
If I want, I can swap the dragon gloves for 'Pauraegen' or 'Cammitrim'. Right now, I don't see any point in doing that.
On 29.4.2017 10:06 Ironshod Al wrote: A bit more playing kills Arthur Pendragon. Not a spectacular fight in any way. Had to flee the level afterwards as it was full of chaos tiles. A bit of LOS navigation gave me to possiblity to kill Bill the Stone Troll before fleeing. He was summoned by a chaos tile, but close enough to a nearby room away from the tilles.
More nice loot from this dungeon. BoS +2, elvenkind armor, Blade of Chaos and 'Thalkettoth'. Also Tengel, which I don't see as useful. Got Himring from DL34.
On 29.4.2017 17:00 Ironshod Al wrote: Three dungeons finished in one day: Camelot, Forest and Lonely Mountain.
A bunch of unique dragons are gone now: Smaug, Glaurung and Kavlax.
The outcome, equipment-wise, is wonderful. I so much equipment to shuffle around, that I wish the item comparison in the _ menu was still available.
Of all the unique fights, Glaurung was the most scary. !CCW just isn't enough healing when fighting him. I think I spent more turns resting, quaffing potions and hiding using ?Phase Door, than actually trying to hit him. I even used ?Teleport at one point.
Glaurung started out buried in a central piller in a cross-shaped room. I could pick when to fight him. Spent time cleaning most of the dungeon first.
The layout for the fight was great. Two small rooms and an ASC between them. ?Phase Door usually sent @ to the other room, away from the dragon.
Fortunately, Glarung doesn't seem to restore HP very fast, so I was able to wear him down while resting to get back at full health. At one point he decided to summon wall-walking dragons, which made resting a bit harder.
Don't know where to go next. It is probably best to spend a few days away from the game and then look at the world map to see if anything captures my interest.
On 2.5.2017 05:27 Ironshod Al wrote: After resting a bit, I went back and explored Mountain and Giant's Hall. I'm still playing blind, but at least have the ability to probe monsters before fighting them. It will be great when my racial ability allows me to ditch the staff.
Decided to try to kill Utgard-Loke, knowing from the forums that he was supposed to be a pain to fight. Considering that Shelob and Smaug were pushovers, I wasn't really prepared for the increase in difficulty. It was worse than fighting Glaurung.
First attempt was abandoned as Utgard-Loke kept summoning and even with 3 (of 7) ultra-elite paladins as pets I could not get enough return damage to survive. So I recalled, expecting the quest to register as failed. It didn't!?
Take 2: Shuffling equipment, I managed to get ++++ in rCold while keeping decent resistances elsewhere. Also managed to get 500 dam with /P (which I stupidly forgot to do the first time). Tried to go for anti-magic, hoping it would keep the summons away. Either Utgard-Loke didn't summon or the anti-magic worked. All he did was throw boulders.
Still with 131 AC, ~500 dam vs P, permanent +8 speed, !Speed, !Heroism and a lot of late-game/end-game consumables it took 4 !Healing, 2 ?Rune of Protection and 1 ?Summon Pet to beat the giant. And that was in a 1 vs 1 fight (my pet D was killed without doing much harm). The ?Rune of Protection were useless and I could have used one less !Healing, but managed to move in a stupid way once.
Looking at the overall exploration of Mountain and Giant's Hall it looks like I need better equipment again. Currently, a lot of monsters drain stats/XP. While I can get decent resistances, I have very little useful equipment that sustains anything. My recent setup sustains STR and CHR, but nothing else.
Also guess I'll have to create a spreadsheet to compare equipment. Comparing equipment with built-in functions takes quite a while. Home/inventory truncate descriptions, 'C' truncates home inventory and the equipment comparison function in the '~' menu is gone.
Note that the equipment setup in the character dump doesn't reflect my best setup. I was playing around with various options at that point.
Like last update, I'm not sure where to go now. Still following the suggestions from clouded forum post, so probably one of the caves, Castle or diving a bit further in Angband or Mountain.
On 2.5.2017 06:13 wobbly wrote: Not sure what you mean by equipment comparison. If you mean your melee damage C then m takes you straight too it.
On 2.5.2017 06:40 Ironshod Al wrote: No, it's not melee or shooter damage. I already use that feature a lot.
In PCB 5.0.5 you could press '~' and then 'i' to get an overview of '*identified* equipment'. It would list your equipment (inventory and home) and show the various abilities for each in a spreadsheet-like manner:
AcElFiCoPoLiDkShSoNtNxCaDi BlFeCfFaSiHlEpSdRgLv
This makes it a lot easier to figure out what resistances and other abilities your equipment provides.
In 6.0.5 I have to inspect every item in my home/inventory using I or x to figure out which item gives resistance to something specific. Only the equipment listed as part of my home in 'C' is directly available.
For example:
The Metal Brigandine Armour of the Rohirrim
Is shown like this in 'C'+'e' (or +'i' or +'h' if the item was in my inventory or home).
The Metal Brigandine Armour of the Rohirrim [19,+15] (+2) {StDx;AcElCoCfSo}
In this case, only 'C' gives me any idea that the armor provides resistance to Sound or Confusion.
In 'i' (inventory), it shows up like this:
i) [ Body : The Metal Brigandine Armour of the Rohirrim [19,+15] (+2) {StD
You can't see rSound or pConf here.
And in my home, it shows up like this:
d) [ The Metal Brigandine Armour of the Rohirrim [19,+15] (+2) {StDx;Ac 37606
You can't see rSound or pConf here either.
Unfortunatly 'C' doesn't show all items in my home (probably because home has now unlimited storage). As such, you can't see that I have The Phial of Galadriel at home, without entering the building where it shows up in a truncated format.
To get the full description I have to empty my home so 'C' shows the full content, pull the armor into my inventory or wear it in order to see all its properties or inspect it with I or x and memorize its properties.

Anyway, my character is still alive and I managed to set up a small spreadsheet with equipment information and build a decent setup. 410 damage, AC 129 and 862 hp. CON is not maxed anymore, but the next !CON or two should solve that problem. I have equipment for the missing resists, but hope to find better items at some point to fill out the empty spots. I'm not too worried about lack of sustains. It is becoming recurring problem, but not unmanagable yet. Again, better gear will fix this.
I realized that Chameleon cave had lower max level than Giant's hall, so I decided to explore it. From the beginning it was easy to figure out the gimmick for this dungeon and I didn't expect much in terms of challenge. The most concerning encounters where with a monastic lich and a dracolich. I tried to use TO, but apparently they resist (or at least the chameleon version does). This is valuable information for later, so I don't mindlessly fall back on TO as the only way to save @ from dying. In the current case, both decided to polymorph just before attacking and the dracolich never breathed.
Final battle was with Scatha the Worm? and some unique naga-clone, that I can't remember the name of. There was plenty of room to pull escorting monsters in smaller groups and nothing wanted to summon anything.
After Chameleon cave I decided to dive a bit in Angband, to bring exploration to the same dungeon level as the latest dungeons. I took on Zoth-Omog as the guardian at DL38 and went a bit further. Not much in terms of danger. A quylthulg that actually moves instead of teleporting was an interesting experience.
Finally, this is the point where I should probably set Small Levels to Sometimes instead of Always.

The gimmicks may turn out to be fun, although "Lets remove all your cool powers/weapons until you beat the boss" is so common (and boring) in modern games. Besides these dungeons I have spent most of my time exploring Castle. Got reflection on a cloak which gave me room shuffle in rNether.
A nasty encounter with Jack of Shadows tells me that I really should get rDark as well.
One of the major encounters was with the Greater Hell-Beast, which finally showed up on a small level. As it was unable to hide unttil healed, I managed to kill it.
My lack of sustains became obvious when an archpriest decided to summon Yibb-Tstll the Patient One.
I think I'll alternate between Mountain and Castle for now, adding a bit of Angband might work too. Maybe I'll bring a stack of -chaos strike and -sound strike to Anti-melee cave to see how well they perform, but I still need a better shooter for that dungeon. My current sling is mostly useful for +3 speed.
On 4.5.2017 16:13 debo wrote: At your level, I might attempt going much deeper in Angband or trying out the Arena dungeon. I haven't played poscheng in awhile so I don't know if there's a quest that guarantees a staff of healing anymore, but having one of those onhand would really help you.
Monsters in the Arena are tough but have their summons mega nerfed and only appear in groups of 1, so it's a good place to fight things that are outside of your comfort zone for great drops.
I don't love the Castle, I find it too dangerous for the kinds of rewards you can find there. I'd rather just be at the same depth in Angband.
On 4.5.2017 17:10 Ironshod Al wrote: @debo: Thanks for the suggestion. I had similar thoughts about the castle, but wasn't sure where to go apart from Mountain, which also doesn't have much loot to offer.
In the end I grabbed a bunch of -chaos strike and went on a rampage in the Anti-melee dungeon. It was way more fun than I had expected. Losing your main power is actually fun if it also happens to the enemy. Returned from DL49 with no stats drained and any drained XP fully restored. I think I'll heed your suggestion and take a look at the arena before diving to DL50 in the Anti-melee dungeon. I have no clear idea of the type of boss I'll encounter. The rest of the dungeon has had little or no theme apart from disallowing melee.
Progress since last time:
Past CL40 and finally maxed CON.
Castle:
Fought my first maulotaurs. Easy, once you figure out the AI. They hurt a lot in melee, but they can be pulled a few at a time.
Nappa the Saiyan is near the top of my unique chart. Don't know why. He was easy to fight. Shuten-douji was a lot harder to kill.
There were a few uniques I would have liked to fight on DL47, but I was forced to leave as I was out of healing and very vulnerable to darkness storm from a dark elven sorceror backed up by a greater basilisk.
Loot: grabbed Avavir on DL46 along with a pair of gloves with anti-magic + sustain CON. Got Burning Hammer xbow at DL45 or DL46.
Swapped equipment to get hLife and rDark. Less damage, but I hope the resistances help more in the long run.
Wielding Burning Hammer, I returned to Anti-melee cave. With a decent shooter and some rods of chaos/sound strike the dungeon was much more managable. It was also nice to note that I didn't get stat drained as much as other dungeons. As I now know that TO beams, I was able to clear a corridor full of inertia hounds.
Uniques killed, mostly by bolts: Mother Hydra, Scylla, Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw, Quaker, Master of Earth, Fangorn, Khamul the Easterling (tough). On the other hand an undead beholder was TO'd away because it hurt too much. Recalled from DL49 after being hit by a great hell wyrm and not finding enough safety on the rest of the level (3x ?Teleport to get to an empty room).
Found Colluin, Firestar, Cap of Siberia (dumped, because it's useless) and a broad sword with vampirism. More equipment swapping in the future.
Taking a break for couple of days now. Progress have been great, but my brain needs to cool off a bit.
On 4.5.2017 17:39 debo wrote: Definitely do not try to fight the final boss of the arena dungeon, just grind there. I would avoid the final floor of that dungeon entirely. I won't spoil what the boss monster is, but there's a good reason that hardly anyone ever fights it.

What I attempted to say was that I would head for the arena before fighting the champion of the Anti-melee dungeon. I have no idea who it is and can't guess much from the monsters I've encountered while diving in that dungeon.

Does Dark cave count as one of the anti-dungeons?
Regarding rLight and the Phoenix, I could bring Great Icefield (a shield) as a swap item, in case it shows up. Unfortunately I don't really have much equipment that provides light resistance. Turmil, Avavir and Great Icefield seems to be the only items. unless I want to switch to Cord Armour of Mughash. With Mughash' armor I'll have to get all the base resistances from other equipment. I'm not counting Forsagil as it is much too weak a weapon right now. I would probably have to dual wield to make that rapier work.
One the funny side, I had actually considered wielding an orcish shield, to get resistance to dark. With your warning, that sounds like a really bad idea as those shields usually provide {Dk;-Li}. :)
On 4.5.2017 20:29 Ironshod Al wrote: Thinking a bit, I realize that I missed Li on the light 'Firefly' in my spreadsheet. That's a perfect way to get light resistance. I'll lose a bit resistance to fire and lose disenchantment completely. Wearing Firefly and carrying Skycleaver as a swap item for disenchanters could work pretty well. Another swap item could be an amulet of devotion. The current amulet is mostly for hold life.

@HugoTheGreat2011:
Thanks for the particular warnings. I hope telepathy can detect these monsters and the monsters can be TO'ed away. At least I should notice them with -Detection and [.
@wobbly:
I haven't got a clue about many of the monsters in PosChengband. I started playing mid march and my current game started out with monster knowledge from Stronghold and the early levels of Orc cave and Icky cave.
I do recognize some monsters as I have played Angband, Doom, Heretic, Hexen and DoomRL at some point. I have never read the Amber series, but googled a quick overview to figure out what the series was about. I do have Warhammer on my RPG bookshelf, but have never played in that world. I have read a lot of Cthulhu-mythos stories, but there are so many monsters around, that I can't know them all. The asian stuff is mostly unknown. Mario and Luigi are the main exceptions here.
In the game I use probing a lot, but this often allows monsters to get a free first attack. I also 'l'ook at monsters before probing to get an idea about speed. I do have the Leprechaun save file from competition 204, so I could run PCB 6.0.4 next to my current game and look at monsters that way. This seems too unwieldly, so I haven't bothered.
On 5.5.2017 08:35 Ironshod Al wrote: Here's the best setup I can manage with items currently available.
I even tested dual wielding, but the loss of to-hit is very significant.
I hope the arena yields some great equipment, preferably something with plusses to DEX without losing existing resistances.

Arena is great. As soon as a character can survive there it's pretty much worth doing. It gets easier with staff of holiness/healing/speed/confusinglights, so hopefully some of that drops there so you can get your deep comfy farming going.
On 6.5.2017 06:07 Ironshod Al wrote: I did notice it, though not immediately. The boss is presented as Scatha the Worm? (with a trailing question mark). It also changed shape twice: first to Jasra, Brand's Mistress?, the unique naga I couldn't recall the name off earlier, then back to Scatha?. The boss didn't do anything as the mistress, though. In fact I have fought her two times more, and the only time she did anything was in the Anti-melee cave where she started summoning hydras. That particular incident helped me realize that _Teleport Other produce a beam instead of the bolt produced in vanilla Angband.
Another interesting gimmick is that probing gives you the usual information, but it isn't stored in your monster knowledge. As such I knew very little about Jasra at the beginning of my second encounter.
As for Scatha, I encountered him for real in Mountain, and forgot to pay attention. Thought of him as just another white dragon, and only bothered to look and probe, when he didn't die after a couple of hits.
About the arena:
I could use a staff of healing and a staff of speed wouldn't be bad either.
My previous character bought _Speed from the black market and ended up with a massive stack of potions at home. Not that my current character is lacking: 64 !Speed at home and 8 more in inventory. Way more than I am used to see in Angband. I still don't have enough healing to comfortably carry them around. 13 !Healing and 3 !*Healing* at the moment.
What does _Holiness do? I don't think I have ever bothered to used one in Angband.
On 6.5.2017 06:27 murphy wrote: _holiness damages evil creatures, grants temporary protection from evil, and heals some hp. i find its worth carrying just for the healing, its more than _cure wounds.

I haven't looked it up, but feel that !CCW is less powerful in PosChengband than in Angband. _Cure wounds heal more than !CCW which is why I carry it around. _Curing may get ditched eventually. Its useful for clearing stuns, but the fail rate is bad when confused+stunned, so it is not always as useful as !CCW.
On 7.5.2017 20:05 Ironshod Al wrote: Entered the Arena and had plenty of fun there. First time down the stairs I immediately encountered Zhar the Twin Obscenity and had to use TO to at least see what the dungeon was about.
Cleared a couple of rooms, recalled and then returned to fight Hoarmurath, who decided to summon The King in Yellow. I cleaned up most of the level while the two uniques followed in my footsteps. When they eventually got separated, I managed to destroy them both.
Continued to recall between town an dungeon until I got enough gadgets to make a new setup. +11 permanent speed, 412+ melee damage and only the loss of levitation. Also managed to get revenge over Jack of Shadows. The Lernean Hydra was just around the corner from where we fought, but didn't move at all.
Went to DL51, fought The Grand Inquisitor several times along with Thuringwethil when he summoned her. I usually fled their summons and killed the new monsters alone or in small groups. Eventually, managed to kill first Thuringwethil and then the inquisitor himself. When I left the dungeon, there were still un-ID'd items around, but someone or something had managed to summon a couple of drujs, that I didn't feel like fighting.
Just before recalling I found _Holiness, and managed to test it a bit. It is a welcome sight, because !CCW and _Cure wounds isn't really enough anymore. I mostly teleport elsewhere and rest instead of trying to heal during combat. The main exception is to cure confusion and stuns.
I can see what makes the arena fun. Difficult fights and much better loot than Castle or Mountain. And plenty of XP as well. Managed to gain two levels during my visits.

I have never used protection from evil much in Angband. It doesn't appear to make much of a difference. At least I've never noticed any major benefit from it.
Maybe the effect is more noticable in PosChengband. If that is the case, I could consider wearing Himring, to get an extra charge of the spell. I don't think I have the equipment necessary to do that yet.

Time to dive! DL52 is boring. I seem to have run out of uniques and the standard monsters aren't that hard. Only dark elven shades are remotely dangerous.
Also, xmas is not going to happen this year. At least not without the help of Jack Skellington.

Sadly, I played stupid around an eye druj and lost too much health. Teleported to get a better place to heal up. This put me in a room with a greater balrog and a greater naga. I expected both to be able to attack me with ranged attacks, so I tried another teleport and landed in LOS of Mycen. I knew the dragon was on the level but decided to take the risk anyway.
I might have been better of trying my _Healing in the room with the balrog and the naga, but the failure rate was pretty high on that staff. I don't think _Holiness would have healed me enough to tank attacks from both monsters. Also, using the earthquake activation of 'Stomper' or reading ?Destruction was not guaranteed to hide me from both monsters and my HP were too low to survive an attack from either of them.

Also works for monsters with shatter/earthquake attacks. Like Shudde M'ell. I fought it on DL57 and we both ended up in a 1x2 area completely surrounded by walls.
