I've figured out steamband isn't about killing monsters, they give little experience and almost no drops. Instead it's about finding items, use-ID gives you so much XP and you will get more items from the floor than otherwise (that may change later).

Adventurer with a tiny amount of spirituality seems like the easiest build for a newbie, adventurer gets the nice utility abilities (raise search to 5 and trailblazer to 15 to unlock them) and the first prayer book gives you unlimited wound point healing and protection from evil.

Who thinks having different weapon types and resistances is a good idea, really? How is it any fun at all to have to carry around multiple weapon types in order to kill all the monsters that resist one (and there are a lot), not to mention the ones that resist all types of weapons and then there's the gaseous monsters which is a seperate thing that also makes weapons not do damage, argh. This is definitely the variant with the most annoying monster list, what a shame.
