If you still want a good magic-based character, do a Warrior-Mage that has an opportunity with Armageddon.
Warrior-Mages have strong melee and are decent at casting spells. They can learn all spells of Arcane + chosen realm, though at a slower rate. Best of all, Warrior-Mages won't die so fast in the earily game!
