That means no food, no light. You pretty much have to be a vampire or be really lucky and find phial early if you want to win. And nightmare mode as a mindcrafter? The first few levels must have been near impossible to get through...

I didnt go into the dungeon until i was probably around level 45. I went into the wilderness, and to a mountainous region, and soundballed a bunch of 'd's to up levels. TK is different from regular Zangband in having multiple towns, that have their own quests, and LOTS of wilderness screens(forest, sea, mountain). When i reached a high enough level, i went to the sea area and nailed Lesser and Greater Kraken/Leviathans for the XP.
