You might consider more well rounded characters, and perhaps you wouldn't have died.

Automata start off asleep too, with a a little stealth, magic device skill to activate staff of tp, or a saving throw to avoid what happened your survival rate would have been better.

I think I'm starting to see why everyone is having such trouble keeping characters alive.
