I had totally unexpected *great* luck with this Ares parentage character. First, I received a Long Sword (Order) as my Thieves Quest reward. Then I found this +4 Speed & STR boosting {special} Pair of Soft Leather Boots [2] in the early few levels of the Icky Cave. I happened to add the Protection rune to the {special} boots before I even knew it was {special}. All this had occurred within ONLY 5 minutes of playing from the start. Now, I need to stop for a break before the RNG catches on.
