I didn't realize louses were a sev 1 monster in NPPMoria lol

Is there like a game plan for mages, or is it basically "grind early levels like hell and then profit"? I feel like NPPMoria is a bit better for this type because as far as I can tell there aren't any monster packs, so most fights are with very small groups? Or have I just been lucky so far?

Also is the bash command gone or is my keymap just messed up? I was tunneling through doors instead of bashing them because / then dir and ctrl-dir both weren't doing anything.

low level mage is hard, i like your idea to carry a lot of oil flasks, im not sure i can suggest anything better. except maybe, be sure to learn detect monsters spell and cast it a lot!

Correct, there are no monster groups in Moria. The bash command is a capital B. Although, through a quirk in the game, tuneling is more effective than bashing, and it has the added bonus that you don't get stuned if it fails.

Mages get much stronger once some of thier attack spells become more reliable. But until stat gain weight management is their biggest issue.

OK the no monster-packs thing is good to know, this is probably the best "true" variant for me to play a mage in then (at least for getting started).

This is super fun, I'm going to give it a real go -- I think I'll stick to human mage for now, but I might switch to half-troll just for some more carrying capacity and fightiness if the early game gets too difficult. I just think that levelling up fast is probably the best thing I can have going for me as a mage...

FYI I built the curses-only version using Makefile.std in the src dir (I couldn't be fucked figuring out all the autoconf stuff). However, if I have notes-files on, it's complaining it can't write my notes file? AFAICT it should be trying to write to CWD/lib/save/, but it can't seem to do it. Any obvious thing I could be missing? I didn't bother checking perms or sprintfing the actual path it was trying to write to or anything because I didn't care that much, but if there's an easy fix I should know that would be great :)

Also for some reason, if I die and reuse the previous character instead of creating afresh, the new dude won't have a beginner magic book in his inventory :)

The notes file goes in npp/lib/user.
