Didn't find a great spear or a glaive the whole game, but get some work out of the Spear of Boldog. A bit grindy and very slow - but I guess I should be happy to make progress with Edains at all.

Now with glaive. Committing to a build before you know what you find is somewhat odd, but I wanted polearm mastery badly.
(The roundshield is blue, that is another artefact isn't it? But it doesn't identify.)

What next? I guess I need critical resistance / CON badly soon enough.

I think that shield is Angrod -- IIRC it's something like res stun, conf, fire? So fight something that does any of those things with it wielded I guess.

Actually I wonder if wearing the shield and bashing on a door until stunned would help ID it, or if it has to be stun from being wacked with something. Or you could just try to drink all your liquour :)

With 4 STR I probably have trouble to find such a door, but I wait for the next Sulrauko.

I am really afraid of cats with this kind of build. I guess critical resistance and careful positioning is the only thing I can do.

If it makes you feel better, werewolves will probably kill you before cats do.

I am not sure for "small" werewolves. I took out some of them from a vault already. The whole polearm / throwing / perception connection does a lot of damage that doesn't show up in the plain stats. I also have poison resistance and the spear of Boldog, which is a very reliable weapon against all kind of wolves even one-handed.

First cats, several werewolves, first greater werewolf... used moral effects to get by. Trumpet of terror was useful against cats when they got too close.

I find polearms to be quite good against cats actually, they are reasonably easy to hit with and they do good damage. As long as you kill them quick they're not a huge problem.

The terror trumpet is indeed super useful for that sort of thing too. Having a staff of majesty or slumber around for emergencies can also be quite handy.

What would you do next? I consider Constitution, Knockback, Heavy Armour Use?

Kemenraukos are indeed the worst enemies so far. Happy I kept Calris. Also - knockback + polearm is amazing. Maybe better than controlled retreat when there are few enemies around.

I might actually be erring on the side of will right now because vampires are going to be awful for you

If it was me I'd keep putting points in melee and evasion to 20 and increase will also towards getting con, you have tons of great abilities already imo

How are you dealing with fire resist so far? Do you just swap to calris or angrod when you need it? What will you do if a sapphire serpent and ruby serpent show up at the same time?

On 23.8.2013 17:52 taptap wrote:
My default weapon is the glaive, I swap to Boldog / Angrod when needed (just looted a silent watcher watched vault - good combination against them) and very rarely to Calris. I now have a cloak of warmth as well, so less problems with the sapphire, fire resistance only on the shield is my main problem and I avoid young red d's, baby d's were ok.

I feel really bad for leaving all the cool swords behind. Dagmor, Amrod are all wonderful weapons for the type of char I usually play.

With recent finds (another point of strength) and knockback finally a very strong build, white d / D's are doable with the spear of Boldog / shield of Angrod combination almost everything else with the glaive. (Left a ring of damage +1 behind.)

Interesting character. I'm glad to hear that Knock Back is working. With the changes to KB in a recent version (i.e. dependence on monster constitution) there are some monsters that you can very reliably knock back, such as cats and vampires.

On 24.8.2013 14:56 taptap wrote:
Died on 950 ft. to double ancient ruby serpents. I could take out single ones due to knocking them back out of the line of fire. With two of them I couldn't - you don't get the polearm attack when you don't pass. Let him be remembered like this when he was still going strong. (I played around a bit more post-death with the same save-file so no death screenshot.) Still, my best Edain attempt so far.

Lack of fire resistance other than on the shield was his downfall. Probably should have kept more unIDing rings earlier for testing when I got the understanding staffs. So many armours / cloaks / helms / boots / gloves with fire resistance in the game, but you can't really rely on finding them. (In a post-death attempt I found the cloak of Thingol - what a difference that would have made.) Alternatively I could have had 2d8 or 2d4+rFire with a shield at that point - but one-handed spear works only against a limited range of opponents, white d / D or M.

Throwing mastery is quite strong early in the game, especially against giants it was great. It lost much of its appeal later on - I killed a baby d with a single spear throw once and they do well against d / D but all the fire diminishes your spear stocks fast, in inventory or on the floor - I guess I would go without next time.

Knockback is strong. It has a "weakness" against packs when they pile up in a corridor - you don't gain distance even when knocking back, but is great to avoid breath at a corner, subdue deathblades or against a wide range of high damage raukar/cats/vampires. (With 9 effective STR incl. the two-handed bonus I could knock back most things.)

I am not sure Zone of Control was worth the xp. It is great with light weapon flankers and maybe with polearm flanking as other people build it, it works fine as well. My idea of polearm mastery was more static.

Spear of Boldog is a seriously good weapon. It made it possible to deal comfortably with wargs, werewolves, greater werewolves. Glaives are quite rare. I found three in the whole game - two plain glaives at 500 ft. and one glaive of final rest later - I doubt I needed two free actions when I already had 15 will - so this was hardly a significant improvement but you never know what boots you find. I was a bit surprised when I realized that vampires don't count as undead for final rest, but still they were not too hard to dispatch.
