At first I tried to play this like a my previous characters, heading to morivant and the orc caves right after doing the warg quest, which turned out to be a bit of a bad idea. I've almost starved a few times, the first time I was weak before I recalled because I was clearing an orc pit, I had to chug healing potions to save myself as I ran back to my home to get some of the corpses stored there. The next and hopefully last time I was down to only one corpse remaining in inventory and home, which was when I realised you need to play this a different way, and began to explore Camelot instead (using small levels).

Though the trauma of nearly dying in orc was worth it, because I found a random wand of rockets laying on D:14, which I am deathly afraid of exploding, so it's store recharge only for that. Good thing it gibs whatever I aim it at, so there's no need for too many charges.

On 14.4.2013 23:08 chris wrote:
Congrats on the rockets. I agree you should *not* risk recharging it yourself, but you can use transfer charges safely provided you have a source wand that is reasonably high powered. Wands of Lightning Balls are fairly common early on and can be charged quite high in the town. I think ~20 charges would be enough to get you 4 more rockets.

A warning on Desperation: This has a significant chance of destroying the device used, so you probably want to think a bit before using it on your rockets. For example, if you tried it a CL25 it would blow up ~50% of the time! In the end game, it might only blow up 25% of the time, but that is still quite a lot.

On 14.4.2013 23:29 clouded wrote:
Cool, good to know transfer charges is safe. Is there anything I should watch out for going down in Camelot? I've heard it can be a bit risky. I'm guessing the knight uniques, though hopefully I'd have enough juice to take them down quickly (or just escape...)

On 14.4.2013 23:45 chris wrote:
Hmmm ... Those knights are very fast (up to +15 speed) and summon like mad. They hit to blind, and follow you when you teleport. Several also cast mana bolts. So, if you aren't careful, you could be killed before you knew there was any danger! I generally do Camelot after killing Smaug in the Lonely Mountain, and even then I am nervous without blindness resistance.

Sounds scary, I have enough corpses stashed that I can probably go to other dungeons at this point, though glancing at the monster file, seems safe to go to camelot ~20 or so? Looks like the castle has a similar monster distribution to camelot, so that seems like it could be a good place to go next, maybe alternating with lonely mountain. Should rocket Azog a bit first I guess...

By the way, is there any reason to wait on eating corpses? Early on I tried eating a few in a row, but didn't get to engorged, so I'm wondering if there's any sort of nutrition cap.

You never get past full by sacrificing corpses for sustenance. It uses a similar if not identical method as Elvish Waybread and that spell that may not exist in this game to fill your stomach.

So you are not just eating things. You are sacrificing them for sustenance.

On 15.4.2013 19:30 clouded wrote:
That's good to know. So if I'm to be ~optimal~ I should wait until I'm weak before eating, though I have a large number of corpses in my house, and seem to be making a net gain on food while in the lonely mountain, so food doesn't seem a big deal anymore (thankfully).

I'm roughly back to where my draconian devicemaster was now, though I feel much stronger, my melee is three times better and I of course have rockets. Now I must align myself with good and become virtuous in patience.

Lack of stealth is the main concern, currently. I guess my AC is a bit bad too, I'm using this [4,+9] armour still.

Almost died to the D:76 quest of Mephistopheles. He began the fight breathing nether, taking me down to 70HP from full despite my innate rNether. At that point, having only !healing, I decided to get the fuck out.

Think I need to get a good find soon... rockets still do the damage, but I don't want to lug around a bunch of different wand stacks for charge transfers in the big fights. Ryleh sounds like it could be good, I'm immune to eldritch horrors after all...

By the way, isn't it the worst when you only have one rod of detection? I should probably just bring some throwaway staves of detect evil, so many times I want to detect and it's charging.

Are you sure about that nether? Damage caps at 650 and with 50% resist I would expect only 325 per breath. Double move makes more sense, but perhaps there is a bug?

Rockets are L80 objects, so I'd just park it at L80 in Angband and wait. Of course, you really need the Jewel to help you find them.

On 20.4.2013 02:56 clouded wrote:
Hm, I did check for a double move since I thought it was much more than normal, but as far as I could tell from the messages he didn't do anything else that turn.

The combat went like this: I start firing rockets, he uses hand of doom, but I resist (no idea what that does, I assume it's like cursing), the turn after that (or the next time he does something other than move), he breathes nether and I'm at 70HP. I didn't realise he was speed 30, though I was +25 and using wands at a quick rate (however fast that is). No summons or anything else around (that I knew about), I had just entered the level pretty much.

My in game message history doesn't go back far enough unfortunately so I can't look back, it's possible I missed a message even looking over it again, since I'm a bit sleepy.

Taking 630hp out of 650hp at 50% resistance is possible, I suppose, but it is a 9 sigma event and should occur twice in every 10^19 attempts. Attempting once per second, that should happen once every 600 billion years! Much more likely is that there is a bug somewhere ... I'll look into it tomorrow once I have rested to full hp :D

Hand of Doom is rather nasty. You get a saving throw and if you fail, you take from 40 to 60% of your current hp in damage. That alone won't kill you, but Mephistopheles is fast enough that a double move Hand of Doom/Nether breath could prove fatal.

On 20.4.2013 14:15 chris wrote:
I did some testing this morning, and in 250,000,000 tries, the single resistance nether damage from Mephistopheles is bound in the range 202 to 449 (expected value is 325). This is resistance from 30.9% to 68.9% (mean = 50%) which is slightly less than 4 standard deviations from the mean (std dev = 5%). Actually, that number of tries is fantastic overkill as there are only 32768 possible results from the randnor function.

I'm not sure what happened ...

On 20.4.2013 14:50 chris wrote:
... One possibility is that a magic mushroom or something had polymorphed you without your noticing. I often fail to notice that, and the effect lasts quite a long time. If your race was changed, then you lost your innate nether resistance and would have taken the full 650hp from the nether breath.
