Mandatory uber-drop post for Mr. Mauler, take II. Last was a Shadow-Fairy, blasted into oblivion by Master Mystic paralysis. But hey, I already have FA covered, so what could possibly go wrong this time?

:D

Maulers have undergone extensive mods since Chengband. For one thing, blows are calculated as (blows+1)/2 so you need "3 blows" to get 2, and "5 blows" to max out your 3 attacks. This makes it much more difficult to get max blows in the early game as you effectively need an 18/100 dex to score that last attack. But the early abilities are designed to augment single attack characters: All the special blow attacks only give a single blow. I always felt it was bad design in Cheng for Maulers to automatically be picking dex for every early stat boost. Now, it makes a lot more sense to start with strength, which is keeping in character. Still, I scored my second blow by L20 but not every race can do that. Indeed, my ring of strength +1 was key, and it wasn't until L25 that I could lose that (and upgrade to a 30lb lance). That last blow is a long way off still, so techniques like stunning and knockout blows are still worthwhile.

Also, Splatter is now a toggle, competing with Block (and Quake, if you like that sort of stuff). Of course, Splatter gets priority, but Block was nice for Azog and is useful for 1v1 situations. There is no "Earthquake Prevention", a technique designed for a single rare artifact. Instead, if you get Iron Ball, you need to live with the quake, but there is a high level toggle that might make this more bearable.

The endgame force branding is gone, replaced with something more balanced. Criticals and dice boosting distribute evenly with player level (e.g., I get +1d at L25, and +d1 at L30, etc, rather than +1d1 all at once) and weight based bonuses are calculated symmetrically about the mean weight, so that light weapons incur a penalty. I was tempted by a crazy +30 damage rand-art sword with lots of slays, but at 12lbs, it wasn't much better than my 30lb lance. Gotta keep Maulers in character :)

Close In is a distance 2 "rush attack". Seems like this wouldn't be all that useful, but it comes in handy. For The Serpent, this is obvious. But also for those Death Swords in the Mimic's Treasure. And with Splatter, you can handle out of control breeding Undead Masses with Close In as well.

Azog owned me with a mere 56 AC, dishing out 150+ damage in a single round at one point (quadruple move?). So I recalled back for my speed potions, spent a bunch of dough enchanting armor, switched to block posture, and tried again. This time I beat him before I had to teleport, but it was close. He's a pretty tough early monster!

After that, I did some more early quests so I now have FA and SI. Still working on resist base, though, and speed? Ah, well speed is a distant dream ...

Holy Carp! That lance of slaying is 53.3 lbs of pure, insane destruction! Its a 6d9 lance of slaying and with that weight, can dice boost +3d2 once I get enough levels (i.e. 9d11!) Is this my end game weapon so freakin' early? I think Meng Huo dropped it ...

C'mon lucky poison brand :)

Immediately after that, DQI had a 5d8 heavy lance inside! Trump? Pattern? Nah, only acid branded.

[CL30:DL36] 02:56
I'm back and forth between my heavy (non-poison branded) uber-slayer and this acid lance. The acid does better damage, provided the slay works. And now, it is no contest. Thanks to boots of Thievery and a ring of dex +3, I crossed the 18/120 dex barrier and picked up a 3rd and final blow. That's 576 damage against non-acid resistant foes! Soon, I'll be able to master the heavier lance of slaying which offers much better crits.

On the down side, King Koopa nearly did me in with a 230hp fire breath. Hmmm, I better play cautiously until I can get >500hp and consistent +10 speed.

3 attacks with the uber lance. It is less deadly than the acid brand, but more deadly vs acid resistant foes. Plus, I think the upside potential is higher given the better weight.

So, I have a horrible innate life: 18/80 Str, 18/80 Dex, 18/90 Con. That's -5 on the stats that matter, but I do have a 113% life rating. It has taken a gadzillion stat boosts to get this far as every single boost only added 10 points at most. Something like 8 Str boosts to a meager 18/69 and 9 Dex boosts to a meager 18/73. And 3 Con boosts, but I started at 16 Con (which is very good, btw) to get 18/14. However, with the good life rating, I might need to keep this life ...

Sorry about that! But no rush, the game isn't going anywhere :)

[CL37:Cloning Pits] 05:41
Ah, that is much better. Palantir, Hammerhand and Paurnimmen in the Pits grants telepathy, all 3 blows without using rings and nearly 1k in cold damage output. Fortunately, Frodo gives FA and levitation so my kit is pretty good at this point. Were I brave, I would do the Dragon's Lair but I think I'll had down to the bottom of the Anti-melee caves instead.

Changeup for more hp. Kazad-dum seems like a letdown, but against evil, cold resistant foes, it actually does a smidgen more damage. And with this kit I net +7 Con which is rather huge. Also, my Draining technique means that killing slightly slower is OK.

Sure wish I had some stealth, though. Perhaps hobbit was a better idea after all, but check out my sole source of poison resistance. Its been like that the entire game! That alone makes the kobold a very strong race, IMO. Plus, there is nothing like quick levelling to speed the game along.

Kobold Power!

Hangin' out deep in the lair, praying for uber drops or fear resistance ... not sure which is more rare? Anywho, I finally scored a decent RoS at CL48 so it is possible. And Brand helps out a bit as well, though I'd much prefer Crimson. I almost never Maul, preferring Drain and Tunnel, but it does beef up the character dumps on oook. Of course, for the Serpent, mauling is best. Unless your AC sucks as much as mine does, and then you probably better block ;P

BTW, attempting to artifact jewelry is not always the best idea. My amulet of resistance only picked up +2 Int and regeneration, and was quite a waste of an early scroll. But I was in the middle of a tricky level and did not want to recall, so I simply used it on what was available. And hey, artifacting jewelry is a new option (added for ring and amulet heavy monster races) so it is probably best that it be nerfed a bit.

[CL50:DL90] 10:10
Terror Mask is usable, but hardly useful. +18 damage is OK, but I only get 3 attacks. However, it does come with fear resistance, so I will gladly trade it for the +3 con and better AC of Hammerhand.

Moving to Olympus with single fear resistance is too early. My stealth is just darn awful, so this is a bad idea. Damage output is good, but I'm still dead in 2 moves and I don't quite have the speed or healing reserves to survive down here just yet.

Fear stacks too like the resists? Didn't realized it because it didn't had a %.

On 17.2.2013 15:58 chris wrote:
Yes. Each fear saving throw rolls the player's power against the monster's power. You get 1 + N rolls where N is the number of sources of fear resistance, and you need to fail all the rolls in order to fail the saving throw.

As a rule of thumb, 3 sources should be enough to handle even the scariest of monsters. And everybody can quaff potions of heroism so that first source is basically a freebie. You might get by with 2 sources and potions of boldness. Also, better wait for L50 for the Olympians and try to have as high a charisma as possible.
