I've come a long way to get to this. Any comments?

Having a Perception of 20 assures that I won't get lost. But...I *really should* get Focused attack and Concentration to take advantage of this.

And I am soooooooo glad I destroyed Vallach.

What should I toss out?

Anyone know what's the highest achieved Perception in Sil? For myself, it's 20, which is very high, let alone the fact I usually do away with Perception...But in this game, it's a different story....

My highest perception was 24 (7 points invested + 17 grace). I'd use one oil and chuck the other. If you are not going the assassin route, I'd probably stop carrying around all the stealth gear too.

Artistry + Enchantment can make some spectacular items, as can Jeweller (though your rings can't really be beat for perception), and you get many more uses out of forges that way. That advice may be a little late for this game, though. I typically use the second forge I find to make some smithing equipment: a pair of gloves of the forge +2 or +3, and a crown of grace, then wait (skipping forges even) until I have enough experience to forge the smithing equipment and then final equipment I want. (I very frequently find a weapon with +1 grace in the dungeon to use until I can smith hammers, or a weapon of the shadows to boost Song of Aule, and sometimes find an amulet of grace +1. You can also make a Lesser Jewel of Grace +1 easily.) High difficulty items take so much time to forge that it usually isn't worth forging ones you plan to replace later.

If you get lucky and find smithing artifacts, which seems to happen to other people regularly, it'll save you many turns. Maeglin's armor might be the easiest to get since he drops it.

If you don't want to invest much more experience into smithing, you might want to grab artistry and make a nice Set of Gloves/Gauntlets of Strength and a Dwarf Mask of Clarity [-1,1d2/1d3]. to free up some inventory. Find some Mithril and make a Feanorian Lamp of True Sight, if you can. I'm also puzzled why you didn't put at least an elemental resistance on your cloak. Jeweller to make an Amulet of Constitution +2 or rings of accuracy/evasion +3 are possibly also within your reach.

If you do want to invest much more into smithing, then I'd hurry to 950' and get as much experience as you can, but it'll be tight.

Don't forget that Lembas restore 1 point of grace (per your notes about being drained).

My Smithing score was probably too low or I forgot to consider FireResist at the time when I made the cloak.

The other issue I have: I have a *really hard time* knowing EXACTLY WHEN to increase Smithing Points to a certain level before reaching a particular depth...e.g. making a Cloak with ResistFire before 500ft.

On 7.2.2013 00:52 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
Also, I didn't know I could use BOTH Artistry and Enchantment SIMULTANEOUSLY to forge equipment!

On 7.2.2013 01:50 jdh wrote:
Yes, you can use them together. In a couple recent games I have used the first forge to make a Dwarf Mask [-1,1d2], since it's pretty cheap and fire resist is so important. Alternatives are a shield of frost (with enchantment) or ring of frost (if you go with jewellery). Or you can make a +2 shield of deflection, etc. Those +1 and +2 point bonuses from artistry and enchantment aren't as impressive as what you get from artifice, but they add up effectively and are much cheaper.

Cloak of Warmth protects against cold and is available through enchantment; and of course there's the ring version. And poison resist can be put on armor.

I think several smithers tend to pool experience aggressively, avoiding spending it unless they need to to survive, so they can dump points into smithing when they find a forge. One strategy I've tried (but haven't succeeded at yet) would be to use the first forge to make three +2 Stealth pieces with enchantment, then dive aggressively for experience from levels and seeing monsters, then come back up, use that for smithing and kill things to build your melee.

On 7.2.2013 02:07 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
What different skill point distributions does everyone use? I tend to start with 5 Melee and 7 Evasion, and add points onto Smithing once my Melee and Evasion are both at least 13, to fend off mid-game monsters. Then I start adng points onto Smithing gradually. I usually like making Dwarf Masks with Lore-Master, to make mid game easier too.

Taking on an Ancient Emerald Serpent without PoisonResist is a little crazy...It breathed on me for a Poison counter in the 40s. When I recovered, my HP was <10, just low enough for the nearby Vampire lord to finish me off.

These days if I am running a smith, I will go with 5 Melee, 3 Evasion and 6 smithing so I can take artistry straight away. As long as you can survive to the first forge, you can then make decent enough equipment to make the next few levels a breeze. This start has been shamelessly copied from HM...

You registered surprise earlier that you could use enchantment with artistry - even better is that you can use artistry with artifice to produce some really awesome artefacts - assuming you can get your smithing high enough!
