I was on a different computer today and didn't have access to my other chars but I was bored so I started this one.

Previous attempts at archers have all been stealthy and they never get very far. I don't do stealthy very well I guess. Anyway, this time I decided to forgo stealth and spend the xp else where. Might put some pts in stealth and grab Disguise/Vanish for the throne room but for now it's going fairly well.

On 11.12.2012 20:48 debo wrote:
You certainly don't need stealth to have a strong archer, especially if you invested minimally in Smithing to get Weaponsmith, as you have done.

Don't forget that Aeglos does insane damage when thrown at fiery foes -- too bad you can't find a way to shoot it from your bow like a ballista :)

That mithril helm was a great find!

On 11.12.2012 21:03 WildKhaine wrote:
Definitely glad I grabbed Weaponsmith. I do go through quite a few arrows, even when not using Flaming Arrows.

Aeglos is indeed nice. It's come in handy a few times already. And yes, that helm was a good find.

Think this archer might actually go the distance.

Given that you're the one driving her, I'm sure she'll go far :)

@debo - Thanks :). Hopefully she will. Has good potential I think.

Well, that was a rough level. Umuiyan in a vault with a bunch of Cat Warriors. Finished that fight with one a few hp left. Really close. Then I was wondering along and found another vault. Good ol' Belegwath and Delthaur were both hanging around in there. Luckily enough I had enough xp to put enough into song and grab Song of Sharpness. They went down pretty fast then. Good times.

I do have to say I really love Rauko-Bane. Makes dealing with all those annoying raukar so much easier. Plus any advantage against balrogs is always great.

There really needs to be some equivalent to Whirlwind Attack for archers. Something like the Death Blossom from that Last Starfighter movie. Pew pew :).

Another idle musing, I want a crossbow. Naugrim should get a proficiency in them, they wouldn't be caught dead using a bow but I think they'd love crossbows. Other races would get a penalty. Give them some decent dmg but maybe they shoot slower due to longer reloading.

On 12.12.2012 02:07 WildKhaine wrote:
Ran into Tevildo and Oikeroi. With a ranged attacks, they are very easy to kill. Very nice.

Really hope I find some more consumables and better gear soon. Might have to scum a bit before hitting the throne room.

Some nice artefacts from some large chests on 850'. Robe of Idril Celebrindal is an especially nice one, don't think I've ever found it before. Helcaraxe was guarded by a Great cold-drake but he went down pretty fast to my hail of arrows :)

Crossbows aren't in the game basically because Tolkien never mentions them. They're also of a technological level above that of the impression we otherwise get of the world. (Plate mail is absent for similar reasons.)

Well, just need to finish clearing 950'. Think I got decent number of consumables though I'd like more !Healing. Not sure really what my strategy is going to be for the throne room so just pooling up some xp and try to figure something out before descending to 1000'. We'll see how it goes.

I would strongly advise taking Concentration if you're going to try killing V. (Don't sing sharpness while fighting him with Concentration, as you'll break the effect every time an arrow shoots through him and hits another monster.)

On 12.12.2012 22:37 WildKhaine wrote:
@debo - Yeah, plan to grab Concentration before heading down. Thanks for the advice regarding Sharpness. Didn't know that.

Mainly worried about what I'm gonna do when I get there. Normally I just open up a can of whoopass on the nearest thing and go to town. I'm pretty sure I'll need a bit different tactic this time. Want to try a non-stealth approach so guess I can just run around shooting things til I win or die.

On 12.12.2012 22:46 debo wrote:
it's actually really hard to envision what you could do as a non-stealth archer to manage the throne room. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

It might be worth taking Elbereth or even Song of Majesty to keep the critters off your back. Neither will work against Morgoth, but it might keep the rest of the beasties far enough away that you can do your thing.

On 12.12.2012 22:52 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, hard to come up with a non-suicidal strategy. Best that comes to mind is to make it to one of the long corridors. Cripple the lead one and let'em bunch up. Sharpness would go through them and do some dmg. Might work but probably just a good way to die. The permanent haste from Idril will be very handy I think.

Good idea with the songs. Never really played much with those, might work.

On 12.12.2012 22:54 debo wrote:
Shit, I forgot you have permahaste. That is super useful. You might be able to kite everything to death if you get a good run into Morgoth's Secret Passage and cripple everything that is chasing you. It's still going to be tricky, though -- I'd really want _Foes so that I could stop to detect where the monsters were flanking me once in a while.

On 12.12.2012 22:56 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, it'd be tricky but fun I think :). Still a bit of 950' to clear and might scum a bit for more healing so could come across a _Foes before the throne room. Haven't seen one all game. Really would like a better bow too.

So, fight in the throne room recap. I took Eye for Detail, Focused Attack/Concentration and put the rest of my xp into archery and a few pts into Perception.

Descended to Morgoth's hall and headed west for the corridor running down the side of throne room. Enemies around the entrance immediately pursued but managed to find the secret door and bolt down the narrow corridor. Then waited for them to bunch up a bit and let loose.

Once they were finished off I proceeded down the passage until I met up with a Silent Watcher. I needed to get by him and find the door so decided to take him out. Luckily I found a nice greatsword in a chest just before. Went down easy with Sharpness.

Then made my way to the secret door behind Morgoth's throne. He wasn't there but headed out into the hall a bit and saw him. He immediately beelined for me so I ducked back into the passage to wait. Gothmog and Gorthaur also decided to join the party. Crippled Morgoth and then took the time to take them out first. Then just used Flaming Arrows + poisoned arrows w/ concentration to reduce him to nothing. Very tense and surprised I managed to pull it off.

Well, time for a break and then I'll do the ascent

On 13.12.2012 02:43 WildKhaine wrote:
The ascent was fairly easy this time. Found three up shafts on the way up. Plus appeared on the level in the same room as the up stairs on a couple levels. Only needed to explore a few levels to find stairs up.

Think that next time I make an archer like this I'll take Point Blank Archery. Spent quite a bit of time firing at adjacent enemies.

I've never found that ability to be all that useful, but then again I've never finished the game in less than 20k turns :)

When the occasion arises that I have to shoot point-blank, I just do it and eat the hit. The ability isn't a guarantee anyways (50/50 that they get an attack of opportunity). However, if you already have archery master I suppose you might as well!
