I'm playing a straight Camelot quester, hoping for the best. I went with an Ares rogue for super fast start melee to speed up the acquisition of replacement arts. Its working so far, though I think at least 2 of my arts are pure random (And a big hat tip goes to the Variant Maintainer who obliged with a double art drop!).

Early on, I was somewhat dominated. Wargs inspired fear, but not for long. Nar was unkillable (at the time) and sent me into a hallucinatory panic. Let me tell you, the only thing worse than that is being paralyzed! I'll get him now, next time he shows up.

Inventory slots are precious, so I guess I need to do the Sewer. I promise to only kill as many undead masses as necessary. The orcs are still too powerful, I fear, so the beloved elven cloak of anti-ares-aggravation will have to wait a bit.

My observations so far?

Early armor was too expensive and I fixed that. Wisdom biffed my psuedo-id too much ... I've taken to just destroying everything at this point, but early on I could not afford to wait for pseudo-id and ended up having to just burn identify (if I had it). Finally, I think there needs to be a level based cap on enchants after all. While my sling is not currently OP (and is downright laughable compared to my super duper early melee), it could get out of hand I guess. So I'll try 5 + L/5. I still want a 15 max as this will be a nice outlet for player gold all game :)

(Next task: Remove scrolls of enchant foo but leave *enchant foo*?)

Only 6 Undead Masses :)

After the Sewer, the BM stocked a staff of speed (and 5 potions!) so I went off to the Orcs. 2 charges of speed to get going and then another the finish things off. Those orcs can be downright nasty! In the process I hit L20 and chose Ambidexterity. I am Ares, after all. And a Death Rogue (so I get all of Bless, Heroism and Berserk from magic eventually). But really, this force weapon trumps dual wielding for the foreseeable future.

After the orcs I did something very naughty. But it didn't work, so I guess the RNG was steering me back towards the light. A couple trips to Camelot to train dual wielding and it became obvious that FA and SI were necessary, so I did the Tengus and then the Mimic's.

Now, it is time to slaughter some knights!!

Is he cause for concern? Nope! Somehow, I managed to sneak up on him and cruelly stab for 52.5d8 damage. *That* was plenty for his sorry butt, it seems :)

I'm going for Sting!

I sense Ares' favor. Not only was The Vault a magnificent coup, the Barrow Downs even had a scroll of artifact creation for me! Now, I obviously don't know what to use it on, so it'll just have to stand ready at home.

Replacement artifacts seem *more* powerful this way then they used too. Granted, you can't generalize from such a limited experience, but the Hagen and Sting replacements, which normally are only mediocre, proved superb as both channeled speed/extra attacks into high pluses! Of course, there is no longer any shot for a good phial or two, and even the hobbit replacements (including Frodo) will generally suck. Jewelry will be a letdown as well.

Enchanting my 3d6 pattern small sword from +6 damage to +10 cost 50k! But it was money well spent, even if it meant selling all most of my goodies. All the armories are 10k shops, so that didn't help (I had some Blue DSM too).

Now, back to Camelot?

Chris, I propose that instead of randarts being evaluated as belonging to one of 3 power categories, they be evaluated as belonging to one of 2 categories. I've had a set of randart names basically ready to go for about a year now, but my main hang-up was not being able to think of "not-too-cool-sounding" names for the low artifacts. The grouping of artifacts by value is all cosmetic anyway (by my understanding), so let's just have "normal" and "high" artifacts, and I'll have an easier time contributing something useful to the game.

I can't promise anything overnight since there's a good bit of sorting to do and I have little time, but I have a method in mind, and if you're in agreement then we can at least put this on the event horizon! ;) I believe this will go a long way towards improving the flavor of the game.

This state of affairs needs mending --- it's almost painful to think that even with names as lame as "Speed" and "Babel", you're still probably counting your blessings that you don't have to wear a "Refrigerator" or a "Pizza"!!!

Well, the thrill is gone. Monsters are now threatening and while my damage output is good, I'm having trouble with speed and detection. Of course, my best replacement thus far is a shield, but I can't bring myself to not dual wield.

My newly acquired Battle Frenzy is making quite a difference, even if it fails at 41% (This with a very high intelligence for rogue). So speed is somewhat addressed. And I've managed quite a few rods of detection, so that is better. But the big take, and the reason for this spastic update, is finding BDSM on the floor at DL37! Wow!! I read my Artifact Scroll (in town) and got:
The Balance Dragon Scale Mail 'Vae Victis' (-2) [40,+14] (+4) {CnCh;Fi;RgLu}

That's OK, especially for this early in the game. Artifact scrolls are back to being lottery tickets so please adjust expectations :)

(Note: Weapons are probably worth reading deeper always. Armors are probably worth it too, but I think only Immunity is affected by depth for armors while weapons can get better dice and slays if you are deeper).

OK, one more dump. Why not? I'll be dead soon and I'd hate to miss my chance!

Man I hate ants. The only thing I hate more than ants is ... ants that summon ants! And I too was on the receiving end of some Fasolt rage taking four rocks from multiple Fasolts (Ares can't sneak). But alas, I have shards resists which is probably my favorite resistance now, slightly edging out disenchantment.

The reward was Shiva's boots. Really! Can you tell them apart? (OK, they came up just a little short but who am I to complain :)

Single wielding? Blasphemy! But as Jack is sure to be about (and immune to detect evil) I figured I'd better be safe. Well, I do have plenty of detection but its amazing how much I use without telepathy. With no stealth, everything is coming my way :(

So far, I've burned close to 400,000gp enchanting gear. This is a good change, I think, though it adds a bit of extra power to the player. We'll need to see if it is too much. The costs are steep. I paid 50k a piece for my last two armor enchantments, for instance.

Where do I get all this gold? By selling all my loot, of course. Since all 4 towns had 10k armories, I decided to load up with 200lb of armor and trek to Zul. It worked as that shop had a 25k limit, and I got my next stash of 260k gold (already burned quite a bit though). Enchanting my shooter another step would be like 150k, so I don't think I'm up for that. But armor, even if I *know* I'll be swapping out soon, I don't mind paying for. And of course, getting my little Vault sword up a bit is nice as well.

I moved over to the Arena once my kill count hit 4k. I should probably do the Giants Hall for the replacement reward before I grow too powerful. Its just I doubt I can beat +4 Con gloves ...

The Questing Beast is down, but Morgana is hiding for some reason. If she waits too long, my fleet feet will allow me to close on her!

+6 levels. -1% fail rate to Battle Frenzy. Still at 42% fail, and still prone to runs of failures as many as 16 in a row, I guess I'm staves of speed until the end. Ordinarily, I would NewLife with low Int/Con but my Life Rating is a staggering 117%.

Death Rogues are pretty sucky ... At the moment, the only spell I use is Resist Poison. I only went this way because I already did Burglary and I felt Craft would be cheating given my recent enchantment changes. Ah well, Craft would be a pleasant dream about now. Telepathy? Double Resist? Haste? Good heavens, I can't remember what passwall feels like!

Oh boy! I've been having a heck of a time killing Maleketh, who simply teleports away at the slightest flesh wound. My previous six attempts all failed, often leaving me surrounding with his kin to deal with. But this time, I led with a couple of rockets! He commanded me to return which is just what I wanted! A round of melee and he starts to run away. Bam! Disintegrate for the kill and I finally learn why he was so difficult: Ring of Speed +13 :)

I'm back to dual wielding thanks to a cloak of electricity of all things.

The Arena is very good for speed leveling. Even an Ares spawn can manage L38->L42 in under an hour!

Fleet Feet is very powerful, and finally I can sneak up on monsters (sometimes). Also, +8 Int from gear means I can cast Battle Frenzy reliably now, so I have 2 useful spells! I'm not sure about Necronomicon, though. Esoteria will be nice but I don't think I can ever manage Wraithform.

On 28.9.2012 17:57 chris wrote:
[CL45:DL55] 10:13
OK, I can sneak up on a greater dragon about 50% of the time. And this is as a rogue, with berserk off, with +27 speed and fleet of foot for half energy movement. Ares is pathetic!

For some reason, electricity resistance has proved troublesome and I just recently found my first ring of electricity. I have a pretty good Frakir replacement at home which would cover FA and SI (also rare, though I just goosed them up a bit) but I just can't seem to make it work.

I guess I'll keep up my risky play hoping something can put me out of my misery. Without double resist and with virtual aggravation, things are very tough at the moment. I can't carry healing with me since it instantly blows up, so I have to rely on a single rod of healing.

My next character will be a Shadow Fairy or something similar ;)

Still chugging. After spending 1,000,000gp enchanting my vampiric weapon (Sadists from +7 dam to +14 dam) I've lucked into a couple more vampiric weapons. If I could find anything with FA, I could shake this Vault Pattern weapon but alas, it seems to have grafted itself to my hand. I really want to dual wield vampirics to compensate for lack of (infinite) double resistance.

Brand dropped his (replacement) bow, but it aggravates. And while my stealth is Poor, there is no need to go all the way to aggravate territory. Actually, with my newly acquired vampiric weapon, I pick up +4 stealth (appropriately named Jack of Shadows) so my stealth is actually "Good". Of course, that's a massive misnomer. It just means monsters take 3 turns to wake up rather than 2 :P

Found myself a very nice crown indeed. It took a while of equipment shuffling and I'm not convinced I am better off this way, but immunities are simply not to passed up!

144 uniques down, but still many to go. I don't think I'm through 50% of them yet! Too bad I won't play without telepathy since I have some nice amulets, but I really need to see those uniques coming! Sure, my stealth is much better now (up to Superb when berserk is off), but they still wake up.

*Now that Int boosts experience gained (by as much as +100%) I think we should restore the personality xp penalties. I'll make myself the first to suffer and the change knocked me from L49 to L47. But I'm back to L48 already and I think I can hit L50 in another hour or two anyway ...

Lookin' good. BTW, I've been playing, but I've died so many times on my Lazy Hephaestus Rune-Knight that I figure I should level to 30 before posting. Damn, lazy is hard! But the reward will be worth it with a "oWeaponMastery(+3) and the Stick and Rune of Destruction:

6 attacks * (4d77=156) * (1.5*3+2 (vs evil) = 6084. 2 stars off the Serpent every round!

Good Luck! Though I think you can do better than just a +3 weaponmastery ring :)

[CL50:DL67] 13:49
OK, 18Mxp now for Ares and its still a snap. I suppose if I were Lazy I'd need 50% more for 27Mxp. Obscene? Yeah, but still doable with a strong melee character who doesn't mind the fast action of The Arena.

I've replaced 107 artifacts and overall, I'm happy with how they are turning out. Only about 1 in 2 arts seem to be replacements, maybe even fewer now, so this is a staggering number of artifacts to find. And yet nothing has pushed me to OP status, though the weapons are still on the good side. I'm OK with that. And I'm still struggling to cover all resists. Telepathy never showed up after my amulet/light biffs so that might still be a problem. I've replaced Thranduil and the Palantir, but not Jack. And none of my telepathy helms has really been telepathy, but even if they were, I wouldn't use them.

As for enchantments? I've probably kicked 5Mgp to the blacksmith for his services, and I'm still collecting objects to sell for gold. A really good weapon will cost an obscene amount to enchant (Hint to all Hephaestus lovers) so you really can never have too much gold. I still have 1.75 Mgp in my purse and quite a bit, perhaps another 1Mgp, at home. Lugging armor all the way to Zul is not particularly fun, but my home is nearly full again, so I better get cracking.
