Serpent of Chaos, I'm coming to get you!

OK, this will be a bit tedious. I spent a long time digging, managed to buy some more wands, and headed down for my L6 quest. It was Lagduf, and you know what? It takes up to 8 magic missiles to kill an orc. I had 55 missiles and 12 stinking clouds, but that only got thru about 20% of Lagduf's entourage. Then, its recharging time. Normally this is quite reliable for a Sorcery HM, but not so early in the game it seems. I have no offense other than my wands so I had to persevere, and managed to blow up all my offense save a single lonely wand of magic missile. 20 or so rechargings later, and I took out all the orcs.

I guess my only hope is to burgle a decent wand in the Dragon's Lair, but I will probably die trying! Oh, I will definitely sell my quest reward I guess ... perhaps the BM will oblige?

OK, Anti-melee caves! I managed to kill a young black dragon with 30 or so magic missiles for experience, tip toe around Loge for a wand of drain life, and tip toe around a Great Crystal Drake for a wand of acid balls. On that note, I shall count my lucky stars I am still alive :)

137hp and DL40 do *not* mix well, let me tell you. Especially with lots of resistance holes. In fact, at the time, I had no resistances at all! But a couple of rand-art lights popped out of a chest, one with +3 speed, chaos resistance and ... aggravate (Victor, you always get anti-magic but I always get aggravate!) Well, a fairy can handle this, but my stealth goes from Heroic to Excellent (aka Awful). Fortunately, the other light also had speed albeit only +2. I even sold my aggravating lamp to the BM for 15k gold, which is in short supply at the moment. Recharging in town is rather expensive!

L20 brought an uber-con boost, so I'm guess 18/130 intrinsic, which is extremely rare for me, but very timely.

So I shall continue to risk death at L40 ...

I'm always more concerned about dark resistance in the anti-melee caves (aka Jack) but that one is covered with a pretty nice weapon.

But with all that firepower you have, you can do more dlvl quests for the rewards right? Easy way to make money.

I'm looking better these days, though still quite fragile.

For some reason, stat potions other than Wisdom (3) and Charisma (1) have yet to show up at all. And I also struggle to find worthy isolated opponents to kill as their are generally packs of hounds, some random nexus breather, hyper nasty instadeathers or some such lurking nearby in the role of spoiler.

Thus, I've mainly been reduced to opportunistic burglary, as you can tell from my ratio of objects to kills. (At some point, I'll need to only count objects as they become visible, not as they are generated).

Holy Cow, I don't think I've ever seen a +4 Device Mastery amulet before! Now, I just need a pair of uber gloves to match ;)

I added object counts to the knowledge menu and boy is that disheartening. I see the game has made 20 wands of drain life and I've only managed to recover 1. And my first !Con was really my 6th? Well, when one plays massively out of depth, its hard to be efficient wrt object recovery. At first, I needed to stay near stairs and simply flee the level if I detected anything super nasty, which was more than half the time! But now, I simply recall to the top of the caves and do quite well, occasionally teleporting away from bad guys (like Malaketh or Jack). And vaults are pretty common, loaded with objects, and generally not worth the risk, so I miss a lot of stuff their.

Its better to be patient ...

I think the new Spell XP system is a tad bit harsh on my rather cowardly (but legitimate tactics). You see, I do quite a bit of teleport and detection, and rarely fight. Rather, I try to burgle tasty objects with the least amount of risk. However, since I do lots of casting without gaining experience, the spell system was blocking my spell xp.

To handle this, their are now two checks before granting spell xp. On the one hand, if you've gained experience since the last time you cast a spell, then you may gain spell xp. This is for the case of the blaster mage who relentlessly pelts their foes with Mana Bursts. Since each cast is damaging your foe, you will be gaining experience, so you will also gain xp.

For the cowardly mage, their is also a turn check and the game now remembers the last game turn that each spell was cast. If you cast a spell and your experience is still the same, the spell system will still grant spell xp if enough game turns have elapsed since the last time you cast this particular spell. So if you detect traps and walk to the edge of your detection range and detect traps again, you will likely gain spell xp for both castings.

All of this is much better than macroing up \emac\emac\emac\emac\emac\emac\emac\emac\eR&\r (mac is just an example) and holding down the bound macro key for 5s to 10s (which is usually enough to master any spell).

Returning to our noble adventurer, I finally had enough firepower for the Barrow Downs ... Plenty actually, since I've begun to swap in rods. But I wonder when I shall feel confident enough for The Cloning Pits. Does anybody know how many hp are in that quest? 50k? 100k?

I think I'll probably dive down to the bottom of Anti-melee instead. I've managed my first Dragon wand, and I'm hungry for more. Also, I think I can find Disintegrate a little bit deeper, though I can't remember if they are L50 or L60 objects.

Bigger Wands = Bigger Dead Uniques ;)

Taking out Glaurung without double resisting fire made me nervous, but he died quick enough. And Itangast? He's not much to worry about.

Probably, I should move camp to the Dragon's Lair while playing the very annoying ring juggling game. But I think I'll hang out here for a couple more disintegrates first. Those are rather nice with my +40% device power!

*HUGE* risk for a wand of rockets, and it paid off almost immediately. Now, do I return to a safe depth or risk it all to score my Grimoire?

Only 23 uniques killed, but that will change ...

Hmmm ... Its pretty tough down here. I really don't see how I am supposed to kill any of these guys. Heck, I couldn't even take down Malaketh as he kept teleporting away at 1 star.

I can either find my book here, or face up to 6 Great Wyrms of Many Colors. To kill them, figure on healing every other turn or so, even with double resistance. So maybe 50 !Healing? And they will suck up 15 or so rockets a piece, so figure 20 wands required. Nah, the book will show up here much sooner than I find the require resources to do that quest!

The great Easter egg hunt continues, and so far I've managed 30 or so 4th spellbooks. Heck, I even saw a Grimoire, but it was so far buried inside an impossibly difficult vault that I had to give up. 650hp and no shards resist with Combat Echizen and Gothmog chasing me outside the vault, coupled with the fact that about 40 tough uniques stood between me and the book inside the vault ... No way! And my *destruction* had long since evaporated so my only option was teleport other, but I could not risk the rocket insta-death.

But now I managed to find my 3rd staff of *destruction* and I'll lay off the bile wyrms. Also, the BM stocked some PDSM for 1.1 Mgp, and selling my large cache of 4th spellbooks, together with all my cool (useless) weapons and even some jewelry netted me almost 2 Mgp. I still need lots of gold for recharging rockets ... Probably 2 to 3 million when all is said and done. But with only 2 wands so far, I'm still in the gathering phase which is likely to last 10+ hours. It would go quicker with my 4th book ...

At some point I'll think about those Great Wyrms of Many Colors, but I really need so much more fire power that its hard to see how. They only have 5200hp a piece (I thought is was closer to 6k) and there are only 5 of them, not 6. So I need 26k firepower, but allowing for regen I better have 30k or so. I only have 6.4k at the moment and the disintegrates are probably a bit too weak. So maybe 15 -Rockets instead of 20, or perhaps even 8 -Rockets, 8 -Disintegrate and some _ManaStorm.

I still think I can find the book here first, though if it takes 100+ books to show up I may die of frustration first! We really need to stop adding new spell realms!

Done!! The big turning point came when I found this 50lb Tetsubo. Now, I know what you are thinking: *That* is supposed to replace Nyoi-bou? Not even close, right? Except it activates for Enlightenment which allowed me to recall scum 50+ times quickly to find my book. That alone probably saved 3 to 4 hours of playtime, and well, I couldn't wield a 50lb 7d7 slay evil weapon anyway.

In the process, I scored Rockets and Disintegrate #3. C'mon rockets! I only need 17 more :D

The Tarrasque is down, thanks to Invulnerability. Even so, a couple breaths snuck thru and you can bet that The Tarrasque breathed every single turn!

Even a mere 3 -Rockets are formidable, it seems. But I must play "One and Done" scampering back to town for recharging. As rare as these precious wands are, I don't dare risk trying to recharge them myself!

With as little hp as I have, you'd be surprised what just nearly killed me. Your probably thinking Shuma-Storms (tm) or Destroyer fists? Perhaps rockets or deadly breaths? Mana bolts or Psycho-spears?

None of the above! I'm trying to walk the pattern and Poseidon starts beating on Shuten-doji, you know, just for fun. Bam! Triple Earthquake critical for 600 dam! You see, with permanent walls and pattern squares completely surrounding me, there is absolutely *no* avoidance! And me on my walk for my 5th -Rockets, which you just know I can't pass up.

Well, I made it anyway :)

Another PDSM? Geez, these things grow on trees. Actually, I prefer my fist suit to this new shiny one.

In a foolish display of hubris, I took down Oremorj with Invulnerability. At the end, it was Oremorj and 18 Cyberdemons, all in line of sight! Now, only 2 rockets need to penetrate my invulnerability barrier to slay me, so this was quite dumb. Ah well, fairy luck, I guess ...

Boots at last, thanks to a couple more ?ArtifactCreation.

Oberon was a bit tricky, and that's never a good sign. But I tired of my scummy evasion tactics (< 2000 kills?!) and decided to go for the big J with all I had. With low hp, this is risky, but there is no alternative for a Shadow Fairy HM. Double Moves? You betcha! Rockets and Chaos breaths are ~500hp so 2 of those would just kill me, but I lucked into summons, disintegrates and one time, a double mana breath which left me at 100 or so hp. One would figure +40 speed adequate, but one would figure wrong!
