- playing a dwarf. Noldor are definitely the easiest in Sil, and everything else is meant as a challenge race.
- not making much investment in Evasion. This affects the chance enemies have to hit you in combat. Melee and Evasion are the most important skills for 'normal' characters. Dex is perhaps the most important stat.

If you don't want to fuss about character creation, you might actually find that the competition character gives you an easier start to the game.
