Always die at the same point with this build... Not sure I could have done a lot about this. Ceiling collapsed on me in Gothmog's halls alerting everything. I dug my way out of the first chamber with the mob approaching and then tried to run past Gothmog. Fatal.

I suppose I could have thrown points at evasion to give him less chance of hitting me.

This does sound very nasty. Drinking the potion of quickness seems like it must have been the right thing to do. It's possible that a potion of Constitution would have been a good idea, but I don't know whether you could afford the turn.

Yes, you might have counted this as an emergency and spent on things you didn't desperately want to give you a higher chance of survival. Apart from Evasion, I guess Hardiness might have helped a bit. We intend in a future version to make traps easier to spot with high perception, so if you go for the right build it will be more possible to avoid stumbling into some of these situations (but they are often fun/exciting, so it shouldn't be too easy to avoid).

How do you normally cope with the fact that forging makes so much noise? Do you clean up the entire area before you start work?

Not sure what would have happened if I'd taken another turn before tunneling through to Gothmog, but with the nasties approaching from the North, I just had to dig and hope that stuff may have been unwary on the other side - unfortunately not. I had at least two other close calls with ceiling collapse - there seem to be a lot of them near the end.

Regarding forging I killed stuff I was aware of first, but had a lot less problems than I had expected with this build.

Each type of trap has a range of levels where it can be generated. When a trap is put somewhere it has an equal chance of being any of the ones that are valid for that depth. Deadfall traps come in quite late. I find this gives a feeling of progression to the traps, rather than having uniform chances everywhere like in Angband.
