My latest, a light combat smith. Made +2 RoA and RoE, and boots of speed at the 1st forge. Boots took a bit of a beating from green worms. Went through a room with 1, running from an ocrish horde, which I dealt with (barely) once I had room to work, but then it turned out there were no stairs on the side of the room I was on, and I had to hack my way through, with no xp left for follow through due to pouring it into melee and evasion in a "worry about later later, for now just don't die" situation. Just picked up some gauntlets of the forge +3, and a very nice longbow (the first bow I found all game), and things are looking pretty good. Forges should start showing up soon, so I need to save some XP for Artifice &/or Aule... hoping to try out a few expensive, but theoretically nifty artifacts if I can find places to make them.

Big room of giants and trolls gave me some nice heavy armor and a lantern of brightness... I used to be afraid of giants, but now I'm rolling right over them - pumped full of arrows on the way it, then a round or two of melee, elbereth, and shot to death on the way out. With keen sight and my bastard sword, I get 5 spaces of full powered archery in darkness. May have to put some points into it once I have my smithing up to where it needs to be. I have 3k for either Artifice or Aule (depending on how many charges on the first forge I find), need 6k for both...

Sounds like this is going pretty well. Pushing for Song of Aule will help keep your Song of Elbereth effective, too (although I'm kind of impressed that a single point in Song is giving you an effective Elbereth at 500ft).

A shame about your boots, after the experience investment in creating them. Will you wait until you can replace them with a proper artefact pair?

Had a couple interesting fights, including my introduction to fire dragons and frost serpents. Lost some inventory running away, but once I got out of their range, they went down far more easily than I expected. Hoping for some elemental resists soon. Found my first staff of ID, and a ring of strength +1 in their vault, though. 1st try at 550' ran into Gilim, and far to many Rauko, from whom I boldly ran away - still have yet to actually kill a unique - the ones I should be able to kill have all made it to the stairs, and the iffy ones I've been running away from. This may be why I haven't found any artifacts yet. This may also be why I'm still alive.

Re: Elbereth with a song of 1, it doesn't work fast, but if I start singing as soon as I think someone's gonna start a fair fight, the cumulative effect of song + getting pumped full of arrows on the way in seems to do the trick. Grace of 5 also doesn't hurt. Elbereth alone might not. But I have the XP for my diabolical smithing plans now, so I raised song.

And yes, I am planning several nice artifacts, and new boots (sprinting, exchange places and as much of a combat and/or protection boost as I can afford when I find the forge) are first on my list.

Food may start becoming an issue - if I don't find more soon, I may have to spring for the sustenance ability.

Well done on dealing with the serpent and dragon hatchling(s) -- but be warned that the later dragons are a much more serious threat than the hatchlings.

I think it's normal not to have found any artefacts by that depth. Sometimes you get lucky and find them earlier, but I wouldn't worry about it. The bigger thing you've missed out on by not killing uniques (but it's still not a very big deal) is experience.

Wow, boots of speed at the first forge! Now that's something I'd like to try.

And so it ends, without ever finding another forge. I hoped/thought that the amulet was sustenance. I was wrong, and it was probably what led to my death. Trapdoor dropped me in the middle of some cat warriors, ran for a blind corridor and found stairs, but they were down. Chose the evil I hadn't tried yet. Wound up in a corridor with a room 2 squares to the right, no one in sight. Tried to wait for the bleeding to stop, so I could run if necessary. Displaced by a shadow, to the room side, not enough hp to fight it so I ran, straight in to the jaws of the serpent that finished me off.

Probably should have used my emergency xp pool to take poison resist when I saw the serpent. Don't know if it would've been enough - I had 9 hp left when the shadow displaced me.
