Scanning the spoilers reveals that your only bonuses at the moment are digging and building stairs downward. But with a mattock, you could gain +10 speed so it might be worth risking death to get one. You should also probably start stockpiling corpses so that you can bury them with your mattock later on :)

Diggers are still high on my list to play as well. How much gold have you dug?
