Found a greater vault at 39 and survived it!

Picture of the vault (tiles) is at http://www.df.lth.se/~moon/greater_vault.bmp

My last char Gluwiel never saw a greater vault,or even a vault half its size (I did turn on auto-scum now). Shagrath has seen two of those.

At first I was intimidated, not knowing that the many vault parts were sealed off from each other, and I was afraid that the etheral dragons were something worse until i used the 'l'ook command. There was both my first Arch Lich and Demi Lich, and I didn't know how bad they would be, but I wished I resisted nether.

As I opened the vault, the Arch Lich was freed. I hurt it bad, but it healed completely and I ported away. It seemed to follow me easily wherever I ported, but I could heal up eventually. A few more tries and it was dead. The Demi Lich didn't pose as much problems.

The uniques were easy (Ulfang,Ariel, Queen Ant), with one exception: Baphomet. I had a speed ring (+7) and used plenty of speed potions, but he's speed +20, so I couldn't outrun him, or lure him out easily. Instead i meleed him and healed whenever I got down under 400hp (of 536),and that was almost all the freaking time. I never failed a heal, luckily, but I did waste a turn here and there, by not healing, and at those times he got me down to 260hp or so, and at worst, roughly 100hp. I had to phase out from the vault several times, and each melee fight felt risky, but I killed him.

I found Caspanion and Purifications and Healings here. (and Elvagil and Dethanc)

Wow, a speed +10 ring!! And another!!!!!! I almost can't believe it..

With speed +20, I should give up my con ring, though my hp is slightly feeble.

Woohoo, first char to reach 50! My last char, Gluwiel was killed at 47.

I think I lack too many resists, though. I kind of gave up trying to get nether resist, but I would like to fill some of the holes at least.

I more or less gave up on trying to get nether resist, but when I reached 3000ft and killed Saruman, he dropped one of those few artifacts that do resist nether, namely The Bastard Sword of Eowyn!!

When I removed Anduril that I had wielded so long, I noticed I lost see invis. Well, that did it. I finally needed to switch the helm of Hammerhand for Holhenneth, and by doing that I finally covered blindness, as well.

Previously, I had found the shield of Thorin, which has chaos(!) and sound resists. As of late, I found Evenstar which at a first sight looked worse than my amulet of sustenance from 800ft, but Evenstar not only holds life and sustains a few stats, but it activates for restore life! And I have the cloak Colluin which activates for resistance, so now I can have double resists against all elemental (not only fire and cold with the priest spell) damage as well as poison.

All in all, I covered 3 of the 4 resists I lacked since last time (only shards left), at the cost of some con and wis (both 18/180). And I have gained ways of getting some double resists, and I got hold life, and can restore life even when i run out of potions!

Hehe, oops. Eowyn gives me +4 str. Now, if I did trade Evenstar for that amulet of trickery (+3), I could have +29 speed!

er.. speed, not str

Yay! Boots of speed (+7) from the black market. But I lost my last source of nexus resist by removing the boots of stability. Well, I'll remove Evenstar and replace it with the amulet of trickery then, to cover nexus resist again.

I actually found Soulkeeper (now where's Bladeturner), but I don't wield it. I was aiming for 18/200 wis for 0% fail on my heals and ports, and 18/200 con for max hp. I couldn't quite make it, but then I found the Palantir of Westernesse! I didn't need Holhenneth for blindness resist anymore, and put on Hammerhand again. I've been wearing practically ever amulet at least for a little while lately, but now I settled for Elessar. My wis and con are now 18/200+ and I have speed +32. I lack res shards and res nexus. I dropped nexus resist cause there's just a few, few monsters that breathe it.

***WINNER***!!!

A really lucky one too.. at worst I was down to 20, 37 and 17hp when fighting Morgoth..

I decided to melee him without filling the floor with runes cause it was hard to port to a spot where he didn't attack me again after just a few turns. I could barely get my mana back for a while, porting around, being found, porting again and again..
so I gave it a try.

It took some time to hurt him for even one star with my low damage bastard sword of Eowyn, but I didn't want to lose more speed (+31) (or nether resist). I only brought 3 speed potions with me, and I think one of them was wasted. I had been trying to scum for more, but gave up when my hand started getting numb.

Eventually, I got him down *another* star, and the countdown began. I played a little foolishly and, for example, used regular healing potions a couple of times in emergencies, before I found out they only healed 300hp.. or I was just healing slightly late (~650hp). Not to mention the fact that I was pushing it with 1% fail rate heals.

Now and then, it didn't look like I was going to make it, but after quaffing so many restore mana potions etc, I didn't want to bail out and not have enough potions to meet Morgoth again. Well, I wore him down. He nearly killed me off several times, but not quite.

FYI, I never killed Qlzqqlzuup. I tried ood'ing him from a diagonal once, but I only hurt him for one star with all my mana. And whenever I got into his line of sight, he summoned Vecna and his lich friends. After killing Vecna I went almost straight for Sauron, and killed him pretty easily.
