I'm talking Giant Soldier Ants and Griffons. Eventually, I managed to locate some isolated Granite Walls, and shot them with my Bolts until about clvl 28, by which time all my bolts broke. The money from the Granite Walls was a total of about 15k, plus some of the other random stuff I collected, and it was ~30k. I shop scummed the BM until I got the =oDamage, whereupon I started scumming Tower once more for Quartz Veins.

3. Alas, even after I found a Quartz Vein, 1 blow for 23 damage per round and AC of 45 was not sufficient to melee them indefinitely and I had to abandon when filled up and were next to me. Collected a good 300k though, and that was enough to get me the Crown of Might and the Shield of Resistance, and the Gloves of Power.

4. After those three pieces of equipment, I could farm Granite Walls and Quartz Veins indefinitely despite having a HP total of 167. And that's where we stand now.

Oy, that was terrible. Failed the Cloning Pits through a huge number of mistakes on my part.

Since the last post, I went into the Vapor Quest, and belatedly realized I forgot to cover RNexus, so the Weird Fume kept teleporting me around. I did mutate into a Dunadan, but also picked up Albino. I would have stuck around a lot longer, but my macro screwed up with the interrupts, and I killed the Weird Fume. Hrm. Oh well, Dunadan isn't bad, and I proceeded to use my stash of 20+ !oNewLife until I got a good life rating and average average CON.

Figured I was ready for Cloning Pits, so I packed about 25 !oSpeed, !oHealing, and !oResistance, plus 50 ?oTeleport and went in:

First mistake: forgot to train up skill with my current weapon (Broad Sword), so I whiffed against the Grendels terribly and wasted a couple !oHealing. OK, not great, but still dealable. I teleport over to the Fasolts, and kill a couple, and skill up to a decent to-hit. I then go around and kill all the melees on the north side of the screen. Not too bad, except my Telepathy showed a black W on the south side. Charon. Hm. Should be manageable. I'll just walk on over and bash him...

Second mistake: no levitation. Uh, doh. This is going to make things a bit tricky. No matter, I can cast Teleport! I teleport to near the Father Dagons, and dispatch two of them before the 3rd summons a slew of Deep Ones. I kill off the last Father Dagon when I'm surrounded by Hydras. Looks like one of the It's came over to play. No matter, I'll kill them handily with my huge stash of potions. Uh... wait. Why am I not doing damage?

Third mistake: no RFear, and worse yet, no !oHeroism. Hm. Well, at least I had enough sense to bring some arrows. I snipe off the It and then teleport to the Top-Left again. I see an orange G following me, and realized to my horror that it was a Dreadmaster. Still in fear with no way of removing it, and the map quickly filling up with ants and hydras, I decide I'll try to shoot it down. I got it down to about 2 stars before I summoned an Undead Beholder and a Master Lich. I'll try to teleport. Fail twice. Read scroll instead. I land in a spot near the Gachapins, who immediately some more fear-invoking Hydras. Geez. Quaff !oHealing and read another scroll of teleport. Land next to a Dark Young that was summoned by who knows what. Well, I guess I'll try to teleport it away and heal up.

Fourth mistake: Not realizing my Device skill sucks. I mean, Lazy Tourist at clvl 37 and 18/78 INT really doesn't cut it, even for Teleport Other. 4 tries and 4 fails. I decide the Boots aren't going to happen, so I zap the Recall rod and kill the Undead Beholder with arrow, while liberally quaffing !oHealing.

Was left with 4 !oHealing, 8 !oSpeed, and 12 ?oTeleport when I escaped. Oy.

Decided I wasn't going to screw around any longer and dove into the Castle with 60 !oSpeed, Healing, Resistance, and Heroism, and made short work of everyone inside. Greater Titans? Hah! No match for my quaffing a !oHealing every other round.

Got my Card, and had to shuffle gear a bit to fit it in. I actually lost 4 CON in the process, but gained 150 damage per round (plus accuracy). At a respectable +21 speed, although HP is a bit low at 561 (18/163 CON).

Alas, I forgot to set my birth options to Preserve OFF and Unusual Room ON. Oh well.

Well, I've burned a good 40 !oHealing, !oSpeed, and !oResistance already, killing various uniques. Despite my pretty cool weapon and good speed, somehow the monsters doing more damage than I remembered. Maybe I'm just rusty.

I'm in High Stealth mode right now, but at some point I'll probably switch on Aggravate with Hell Collar and the Terror Mask.

Haven't really thought about the end-game uniques. For the Unicorn in particular, I was thinking of just taking 200 !oHealing and fighting an attrition battle using melee and arrows. Getting Magic Device up requires some dedicated gear; I'd basically be sealing up both gloves and amulet slot.

I think I've now officially used more than 100 !oHealing, and have about 220 left. I suppose I could always scum for more, but wow, was Hengband always this hard?
