To be fair, that does in fact apply in real life, at least in the same sense that it does in RPGs. When you're on a hike, eating food is the only real way to reduce your load, and loading back up on water can become quite painful.

+1 !!! I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2011, and eating to reduce the load was definitely involved. Eating everything possible when in towns was also necessary, since I was burning upwards of 12,000 calories a day -- far more than I could carry in my pack.
