Back in late 1999, I was reading a Roger Zelazny book and while searching for some information on him I came across ZAngband and from there, Angband.

As a result, I've been playing on and off (mostly off) for nearly 10 years without even coming close to winning . I occasionally get characters to level 30+ and once I got a warrior to level 50 but that's about it

I discovered Moria in '89 my freshman year in college. Umoria followed soon after. In the spring of 1990, I dropped out of college stupid Moria. I eventually got reconnected to the internet, and found Angband soon after.

No legitimate winners yet. So 20 years, with pauses.
I miss autoscum... but not that much.

Only roguelike I ever finished was Nethack, and only by save scumming, so it hardly counts. I've lost the taste for Nethack's silliness since then.

Other than that, I've been trying and failing to win since Moria. (I think it was Frog-know, in about 1990, so almost 20 years)

I have also failed to win Crawl (which I love) ADOM (which I sometimes love) TOME (which was fun but messy) Slashem (nethack variant) Zangband, Oangband, Sangband, CthAngband, FAngband, Furyband (messiest of all, that one. I feel guilty whenever I make a Jedi, but I can't help myself) Steamband (which rocks hard) and honestly, probably 40 or more different variants. I love to try out new variants, but seldom make it far. The eclectic nature of the list I've tried is symptomatic of why I don't win- I tend to try lots of new things rather than master the old ones. Well, at least I'm enjoying myself.

I'm quite new to angband, it's been 18 months playing without winning. I'm happy to see that I'm a "normal" player.

Playing 10-15 years now, never won and i fear i never will. Also this forum and other sources offer great tips. And i am starting to follow them - dungeon diving, dont take all crap with you, read to identify and prepare yourself. I may be able to do it with all this hints but the lack of alertness will be always my biggest foe.

                    I actually read that as
"How long have you been playing without whining"

That would be about 4 years ;]

I Love Elona, its a nice blend of roguelike and "regular?" rpgs ( I wish Noa would re-surface)

I've been playing roguelikes hardcore for like 3-4 months and thought I was a failure for never getting anywhere in most of them, its nice to hear that you can go for years without winning makes me feel a bit better.
