    Lurker here . . . . self introduction, I guess!

Well - I've been messing with computers off and on since about 1982. I've played a few rogue-likes now and then, but never *really* got into them.

A few weeks ago, I had some real idle time, and had just done a fresh install of YALD - Yet Another Linux Distro. Looked at the available games, and decided to install Angband - I quote, "Angband is a single-player, text-based, dungeon simulation derived from the game Moria, which was in turn based on Rogue."

Ooops - this time around, I've gotten hooked. Like any other drug, I sniffed, or snorted, or inhaled one time to many, and I'm hooked on it.

Anyway - I've killed off a couple dozen characters now. I haven't yet reached character level 30, nor have I survived as far as dungeon level 50. I'm getting better, as time passes, but I'm still not much good.

I finally started using Google to find solutions to problems, instead of just bashing away mindlessly at every apparently un-solvable challenge. And, Google keeps brinking me right here!

For instance? I'm wearing the cloak of Thoringil found lying on the floor of level 1 [+1 +9] rAcid pFear see invisible rParlysis can't be harmed by acid, elec, fire, cold

I have a Fur Cloak of Protection dropped by Ulfast, son of Ulfang at 900 ft [+3+17] rShards, cannot be harmed by acid, elec, fire, cold.

So - which is better? I mean, I whooped and hollered when I found Thoringil, because I knew it was pretty rare, and it offered a LOT OF PROTECTION for a level one character. Ulfast's cloak appears to be better - but I googled for "angband shards" to see what I would see.

Derakon's response to a post back in 2012 (not quite three years ago) gave me my answer. I'm dropping the Fur Cloak, and keeping Thoringil until something better comes along!

Great resource site, people! I'll be coming back again and again, so I finally just registered, so that I can say "Thank you, Derakon!" And, of course, Derakon isn't the only one to say "thanks" to, he is just freshest in my memory right now!
