I am relieved people have still to calculate double digit squares (and don't yet know them by heart). Anyone into prime numbers?

After doing lots of projecteuler problems, I have come to despise prime numbers.

I know this is resurrecting an old thread but I just wanted to add that I am in my late 30's too. I started playing Nethack back in '95, in my college days. I discovered Angband around 1999-2000. I'm not a mathematician or even much of a programmer, but I once taught myself enough C to add muskets into Angband 2.9.0 or so. (Basically, muskets did a lot of damage but woke everything in the area with a large boom, like a shrieker mushroom patch.) I never shared the code, though, and have since lost it. Maybe someday I'll add muskets into a newer version. I don't have the time or inclination to create a proper variant, though.

Currently, Angband is about the only computer game that holds my interest. I'm just not impressed by more recent games with all their new-fangled graphics.

Just wait till our quantum computers start working and get their linear-time prime sieves going. Goodbye 99% of today's crypto.

Ah, some company of similar age. I am 22. I started at 3.0.4 in around 2009. And also I am currently doing my degree in Maths. There seems to be amny here.

Coincidentally I am currently working on some research related to breaking cryptosystems.

During these five years, you do not lose interest in the game? Or that he occasionally lost, then come back? I think I'm beginning to grow cold to the game against the background of recent defeats

Speaking for myself as somebody who's been playing the game for several years, I tend to play a lot of Angband for a couple of months, and then take a break for a while. When I get into my Angband binges, I tend to ignore all other games, and like you said there's only so much defeat you can take after a while. I generally need to give myself a little bit of a breather and spend a little time with my massive list of unplayed steam games.

There's a obvious cure to that: don't lose

I have not lost interest to the game yet (I'm just slightly less fanatic) in ~20 years of playing.

Why dont you post your guys on the ladder ? I am sure many would be interested to see how you play (me included).

he's obviously scared of us seeing his turncount and realizing he's been playing the same character for those 20 years

I'm not interested in competing, so getting any rank doesn't attract me. I also don't pay attention to my turncounts (I have no idea how many turns my current char has used), so that's probably quite high right now. (I have ID rod and need to wait for it to recharge way more than I would like to).

OTOH if someone learns something maybe I should post a char in the ladder. Getting one there now...

[EDIT] Ladder doesn't allow me to post, because there is already char with same name and higher score.
[EDIT EDIT] reposted with different name. Wanderer II (should be like wanderer million)

Good! The ranking feature of the ladder is widely ignored anyway, thats not its purpose.
What happened to poor Sting ? +1 str dex con only ? I was aware that "we can have different pvals now!!!" has been used as incentive to shave off everywhere, but Sting. +1....thats so cheap. Just....no.

Sting has gained +3 speed. It's still quite good weapon.

We need mathom house. It hurts me to throw phial away to make space in my home, but I just had to do that. Two minor vaults that had excellent treasures which I just might use later.

Started a new, odd combo: Dwarf mage.
