After a hardcore couple of months Angbanding my ass off (concluding about a month ago after a my stupid fault Morgoth killed me) I decided to hunt around for a breath of fresh roguelike. Well I found some real winners! (even if you may consider these more like roguelikelikes or maybe psuedoroguelikes) I thought I would share them with all my Angband peeps
#1 FTL: Faster than Light
This game is fuckin sick. If you have ever wished to don the uniform of a Star Fleet captain, this game should satisfy that itch.
Basically: You pick a type of ship, pick a layout, and name your crewman, (Starting with very limited options, expanding greatly as you play) and then proceed to battle, haggle, and firefight your way across various star systems, with the ultimate goal being the defeat of Morgo-er I mean Boss Space Monster(don't wanna ruin it! also i haven't got that far yet)
VERY FUN and VERY VERY ORIGINAL
#2 The Binding of Isaac
This game here. Oh buddy. It took me a bit before I realized the depth to this game. Initially, it appears very generic and simple. So far from that is the truth. There are something like 250 different powerups to mix and match. Seeing as how you can carry something like 20 powerups, there would be something like 250!-230!. (Those are factorial symbols, but I digress)
The best way I can describe this one is a Legend of Zelda roguelike (NES Legend of Zelda)
This one is being remade for the PS4 and XBOX1 as well. So I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't blow up in popularity kinda like Spelunky did when it hit XBOX live. (Speaking of Spelunky, play that one too! it's fuckin awesome, and free on the PC)
#3 Rogue Legacy
This one is pretty damn fun. I've recently been hooked, investing about 4 hours a day. I can't help it. The other night, my girl was waiting for sex, I was like hang on, lemme save, the next thing that happened was I hear snoring and I realize that it had been over an hour since I spoke.. Yeah. It's like that
This one is more of a side view action platformer roguelike. You travel into an everchanging castle, fighting until you die, then choosing an heir (3 random children to choose from, each with random class and various random traits ranging from useful to counteruseful to just funny and/or dumb depending on your sense of humor) so you choose an heir, than that heir spends all his dead parents money to improve weapons and armor and magic and yada yada
I highly recommend any and every one looking for a new game to check all 3 of these out. They are my recent winners as far as games go. And I am far from easily impressed. I've been RPGing since Ultima/Wizardry/Dragon Warrior 1/Final Fantasy 1. So it takes quite a bit of originality to catch my attention, let alone impress me. These game impress me. In the order I have listed.
