Why are my pebbles doing 13700 damage?

So I downloaded v4 today and started my second ever mage char (I mostly play rogues). I was playing along, thinking v4 seems to be a lot easier than V, because I'm not failing. I picked up a sling for ranged attacks (great, it's "of slaying"!) and a couple thousand turns later, picked up some pebbles I got from killing Brodda. I equipped and ID'd them--they're the first pebbles I've found in the entire game so far. Cool, they're also "of slaying". Inspected just for fun and *whoa*, they do 13700 damage to undead, 7828 to animals, 1957 to demons, 0 to creatures made of stone (and also 1957 to creatures made of stone, which I don't get), and a few more insane amounts of damage. I'm assuming this is a bug--how do I submit a bug report?

Also, uploaded my char to the ladder, here's the dump. Take a look at the pebbles in my quiver.

I'm noticing that by the description they seem to be branded with cold, electricity, acid, and poison.

but the damage description is very weird- o vs. evil creatures? but 13,700 vs. undead?

Yeah, that was pretty much my train of thought when I read the description. But hey, I don't have a problem with it. The Ringwraiths are going to be a pushover now. :-)

IIRC bug is in the description, not into actual damage. Also in v4 ranged attacks are broken as in they do not do enough damage. Or if that has been fixed it might be other way around. Or something. v4 is not stable variant, it changes faster than it takes me to write this, so do not expect it to be balanced.

It's still a reporting bug-- saying how much damage things do is a new feature, and it makes sense that it is hard to do for missiles and launchers because you need to know both to calculate damage. You can try throwing an arrow at a dragon to demo. . . I think Magnate is planning on reworking missile combat, but it'll take a while and there'll almost certainly be a big announcement when the first rev hits.

Ah, okay, thanks for the info. Maybe I won't be using those pebbles against the Ringwraiths. I'll have to test them some more and see how much damage they actually do in combat. And yeah, I know v4 isn't stable. I just wanted something new because the stable version is breathing boredom for twice my hitpoints. :P And I must say, I'm very impressed by Shockbolt's tiles, they look amazing. Easily the best tileset for Angband yet.

I'm sorry this bug is still extant, but please rest assured that we're aware of it - it's mentioned in most threads on the v4 forum ;-).

It's waiting on archery being 'fixed', i.e. moved across to the new combat system (again, see threads on archery in v4 forum) - we're not yet certain how multipliers will work, so it's hard to calculate damage properly.

@debo: I think Sil is too short for me. I want a long game that I can come back to over a period of weeks and months, which IIRC Sil doesn't provide.

@Magnate: Ah, okay, good to know, thanks for the info.
