    Ironband DITL

    Hi

I have been inspired (by Eddie on RGRA) to begin a Day In The Life account of an Ironband character.

I hope the story will be interesting, not because my play is skillful (it ain't) but because of the novelty of the variant.

    I will cross-post to RGRA.

I roll up Downey as a Wood Elf. Aiming for 12 Str and Con, 14 Luck and Agility, I get:

    Str 13
    Int 12
    Wis 15
    Dex 16
    Con 11
    Agi 14
    Ste 14
    Per 13
    Luc 14

Downey finds himself in a dark corner of a hallway with a parchment in his hand 'you must descend to the 50th level of The Pits of Angmar and kill The Witch King, do not return until you have completed this mission, your reward is to keep the treasure you find along the way'. 'Fair enough,' he thinks, 'but I thought I was going to be able to buy some kit first?' But no, there is no town in Ironband and Downey will have to rely on what he is carrying and his finds in the dungeon.

Downey steamrollers the hapless denizens of the dungeon until he gets CL 2, and raises Agility to 15 for +1 speed. On DL 1 he also finds !Heroism, ?RCurse, ?DetectTreasure and 3 of an unidentified ! (which turns out to be CLW, the other likely alternative was Neutralise Poison.) Plus some light armor, which he'll save until it pseudo-ids or he is ready to use a ?Rcurse, and some shots, which would be nice if he had a sling (in fact, being an elf, he starts with a bow).

Downey drops to DL 2 at turn 979, still on his first torch. By now he is starting to discover his true capabilities (as one does at DLs 2, 4 and 6 in Iron); he gets a big Dex boost (now 18/20, giving not just extra blows but also putting him up to 1.3 shots/turn), a smaller Strength boost, and loses some Agility (darn).

He steamrollers some more monsters until CL 3, and puts his Agi back up to 14. Jackals corner him while he is scared by some ghost, and he has to use up more arrows than I like. He kills the ghost for =SlowDigest (great!).

Meeting cave spiders in a dark corridor, Downey needs to use his first !CLW. A spider gets him up to CL 4, Agi back up to 15.

Downey is finding this easy and takes the stairs down to DL 3. Turn 1873, good food situation, not bad on light either (he's used one torch but found a replacement).

By now Downey has found ?Light and ?DetectTraps. And various light armors which he doesn't try on yet. He finds and wastes !Speed, and picks up an !Oil that will be handy later.

He meets a green glutton but only loses 1 ration. No big deal. He kills a skeleton kobold for CL 5, and puts Luck up to 15, hoping to find some good treasure. This depth is easy: torch extinguished to save fuel, he makes for the stairs.

DL 4 at turn 2980. Downey is still learning his true strengths; he gets a big Luck boost, a small Con boost and an Int drop. The Luck and Con are nice, but Downey is discovering he's not really cut out to be a wizard; he can't reliably read scrolls now, and his fail rate is up to 15% for CLW, Bless and Light and 95% for Sleep. He should have paid more attention in school.

He does, however, find a lantern - yay! - and a sling, which could be very handy (he's running short on arrows). Wields the lantern - with one !Oil in reserve he may never need to go back to torches.

After some time he also finds a cutlass and swishes it around experimentally. Nothing seems immediately wrong with it so he keeps it and drops his starting dirk. He feels quite villainous with the cutlass so he puts on a wolfskin (and is glad to see it's also not cursed) and calls himself a brigand.

Downey picks up some gold for CL 6 and puts Int back to 11. Spotting the treacherous Black Lotus, he leaves the area. He finds stairs: DL 5 at turn 3961.

"You hear lots of monsters waking up!" Downey looks around in confusion. It's a bunch of orcs... and Lagduf... and the Bullroarer! 'Were you chasing those orcs?' Downey enquires, but the angry hobbit takes this as a challenge and chases him instead. Downey doesn't feel up to fighting the whole crew and runs for the stairs; with +1 Speed he outstrips the orcs but not the stumpy hobbit, who catches up to him and whacks him down to 5 HP. Downey escapes downstairs with a sigh of relief.

DL 6 at turn 4186. This is Downey's final round of self-discovery; he gets a big Perception bonus, a small Stealth bonus, and a Wisdom penalty. Downey is pretty much coming to the conclusion that his vocation is as an archer; in the short turn he gets +2 to missile hit and damage from the Perception, and in the long term he can look forward to extra shots if his Dex goes up a bit more. Spellcasting, however, is pretty hopeless with these stats.

Downey decides to get a bit of kip and rests to full health, only disturbed by a passing ghost which he kills for !Berserk. Feeling refreshed, he prepares to continue his travels...

Downey continues into the dungeon. He soon develops a special feeling about his surroundings! What does fate have in store?

He finds Lagduf and some orcs, has to spend !CSW, ?Phase and ?Heroism on Lagduf (ouch) for a crap drop, but some time later has gotten up to CL 9, raised Int to 12 to make spells a bit less impossible and Agi to 17 for +2 Speed. More importantly he's found copies of two dungeon spellbooks: Intermediate Transfiguration and Defensive Magical Theory. While no great shakes as a wizard, he can manage Detect Evil at 11% and Detect Traps and Doors at 50%.

Downey finds a Cloak of Stealth and various flavors of potions and scrolls but none of these seems to justify 'that special feeling'. He kill a lemure for CL 10 and pumps Int to 13, allowing Detect Traps and Doors at 10% and Phase Door at 20%, with Identify and Create Food not too far away. Better stop raising Int for now though, there are other priorities.

Aha! A vault! Surely this is the special feeling that was promised. Brigands and Wargs and the like lurk within. A dastardly Brigand steals my Defensive Magical Theory but is kind enough to bring it back, along with all the junk I've dropped for some time. Downey fights, heals, phases, and finally gets on top of things, though with just 3 SP left (and his spell points will not regenerate until he takes the stairs down). And... the gauntlets he's just picked up pseudo as unique.

Downey reads a scroll while standing on the stairs and it turns out to be teleportation! As a whirring noise builds up he considers taking the stairs... but succumbs to temptation and waits. He finds himself across the level, fortunately in a safe area, and walks back to pick up !CSW, -Create Food and a 'splendid' spear. (Wield-testing of the spear shows no brand, Downey suspects Slay Orc.)

DL 7 at turn 7130. Some yeek called Orfax shows up with his friends and gives Downey a magic shortbow, magic arrows and CL 12; he pumps Agility to 18/10 for +3 Speed. The bow is certainly a huge improvement, tripling his missile capability. Downey's Luck is paying off.

Time to drop deeper. DL 8 at turn 8257. Per goes up to 18, close to extra light radius. Grip finally turns up and is instantly slaughtered (elves, even half elves, don't like slobbery dogs). Downey tries on some rings, with ?RCurse in mind, but they all turn out to be useful. A baby gold dragon gives CL 13, Con up to 13, still only 97 hp.

DL 9 at turn 8918. Downey, noticing he can now cast Identify at 50%, heads to the downstairs and does just that. The unique gauntlets from the vault turn out to be Paurhach, and Downey also has RAcid and RCold from jewelery now.

DL 10 at turn 9005, Str to 15. Downey also drinks a potion which turns out to be Hastiness, for an increase in Agility and a drop in Perception, no bad thing.

Dump is laddered, but key bits are below... Downey is looking good for light, food, and ID, but would really like more escapes and healing, and a branded weapon or better launcher for more killing power. (There must be tougher uniques than Lagduf out there.) Next few stat increases should definitely go on Con.

Downey finds a Talisman of Holiness (so he can now cast Bless for 1
SP) and heads downwards. DL 11 at turn 9443, and a special feeling.
Kill a Forest Troll for CL 14, Con to 14. Eventually the special
feeling turns out to be Narthanc; Downey is glad of it as he has been
hit by a scorpion and is no longer strong enough to swing his
broadsword effectively. Somewhere along the way he uses his last !
Oil, but at the downstairs he spams -CreateFood to boost up to 9 food
        rations.

DL 12 at turn 11315, Con to 15. Another special feeling! Downey
manages to get a level-up from killing Uruks, boosts his Str and is
again able to use his broadsword; he switches Narthanc to quiver so he
can zap it. Somewhere along the way he steamrollers Fang and switches
up to a 'splendid' longsword which turns out to be the near useless
Slay Demon. CL 15 from a fire spirit, Con to 16... and, gah! the
special feeling was a coin pit! Lacking sources of teleportation,
Downey runs for it and makes it to the stairs.

DL 13 at turn 12627. Detect Grishnakh. Good grief, another special
feeling. Downey is really not feeling very secure; he has no means of
long-range teleportation, no spare oil and no healing apart from one !
CLW. Not enough for any big fight. He finds and quaff-ids Dust of
Disappearance and !CCW while clearing an orc pit. A few more of those
would help. Gains CL 17 from the put, Con to 17.

DL 14 at turn 14213, Int to 14. Downey finds =Sustain Wits, not that
his wits are that great to start with, and spends ?RCurse on a wield-
id'd "Teleportation. He meets Nugrush the Goblin Lobber and defeats
him, using temporary RFire from Paurhach. Nugrush turns out to have...
Paurnen! Good grief, one set of gauntlets leads to another.

Aargh! Downey is ambushed by another vindictive scorpion and loses 2
more Str. Switch out to Narthanc, it's about all he can manage with
Str 12. He meets Illitha but is in no state to deal with the wench and
        heads downstairs.

DL 15 at turn 15525. A troll pack and a nether worm mass are swarming
around the first corner. Downey lays into the trolls - CL 18, Con to
18, now up to 170 max HP - and manages to hack his way out of the
room. On his way out, pursued by trolls and worms, he hits something
invisible... sidesteps it, turns a corner, runs into a mob of half
ogres. He frantically tried to backpedal... but there's something
invisible still behind him! Trapped, he gets whacked by an ogre and
        drops dead.

Well, I'd call that YASD - but not too far from near inevitable death
from 'just not being tough enough'. In Ironband you need to have a bit
of an edge over the early monsters so that you can kill them easily,
build up consumables rather than using them, and be adequately
prepared for the mid game. A better weapon would have helped, or a
better launcher. And next time I'm going to keep a better look out for
        those damn red scorpions!

We now switch to the story of Downey's old classmate Ferrin (a dwarf,
look ye! who ever said elves and dwarves can't get along).

Ferrin is the same CLVL as Downey but that's about where the
resemblance ends. Unlike Downey, Ferrin has a Westernesse weapon,
Colluin and the Phial, putting him in far better shape for
dungeoneering. He also has collected plenty of food and some
          consumables.

Ferrin is basically a warrior but he is a cunning little fellow with
18/10 Int (didn't seek to raise it, but won't complain). This allows
him to cast some mid-level spells like CSW, Barkskin and RCurse.
However he's not particularly wise and can run out of SP easily. Also
he only has 2 dungeonbooks (not including the one that gives ID).

Ferrin is currently fighting a pack of Earth Hounds, he kills one for
CLVL 19 and raises Luck to 17. He wants 18 Luck and after that he'll
leave it and spend the rest of the game raising Agi, Dex and Con in
roughly equal proportions for best melee ability (his Str is already
          high enough for a dwarf).

He takes Thengel from a ranger for RConf, Per and Wis, and not long
after he finds his first ?*ID* and uses it on the randart shoes he's
been wearing since DL 3. SustWis, SustAgi, light - better than
expected. He drops his =SustainSpryness, wears 2 Protection rings for
          AC 92, really helps.

Shortly after Shagrat gives him a Great Spiked Flail that he's too
short to use. The proliferation of 2H weapons is getting annoying.

DLVL 15 at turn 20729. A phase spider gives CL 20, Luck to 18.

DLVL 16 at turn 22587, Con to 18/10. Ferrin sees a pit with
Sangyahando in it and sets off to remedy an ancestral grievance. He
clears the pit, finds an -*ID*! Expensive at 14 SP per shot but will
be very handy. Uses it to identify the ancient DWARVEN gauntlets
          Pauraegen, and a =Damage +10 which replaces a =Protection and
increases melee DPR by about half.

CLVL 21 from Ferrin's first young dragons. Agility to 17 for +2 speed.

DL 17 at turn 27069. Enough for today. All going well, consumables
stocks healthy. Backpack space a bit constraining and a source of
ordinary ID would be nice. Ordinarily I'd be worried about running
into mature dragons and elemental-damage uniques in a few floors time,
but Colluin and Thengel will solve that.

into mature dragons and elemental-damage uniques in a few floors time,
but Colluin and Thengel will solve that.
Ferrin descends in search of what he may encounter. His pack space is getting tight and he drops (in order) !CLW, food rations, !Berserk, -Bless.

            DL 18 on turn 28071 - Luck.
            Hack down Angamaite easily.
Ogre Shaman for CL 23 and Dex 18/10.
Find !Restoration, nice. (Note to self as maintainer - !Restoration should be deeper; and really, as it turns out, all Restore Stat potions are too common.)

            DL 19 on turn 30749.
            Find Talisman of Healing, nice.
See Khim. Well met brother dwarf! But we are a hot tempered race and soon the meeting has degenerated into a brawl. Khim is killed (with !Speed) and a blood feud with the sons of Mim appears to have begin.
            Kill Brodda.
This level is lucky for spellbooks! Find Bigby's Handy Handbook and Otiluke's Damp Libram AND Intermediate Transfiguration - saves some slots and gives some great spells, especially detection and escapes. Over the next few levels I end up spamming Create Missiles from Otiluke, to get myself a set of nice bolts, so I can throw away my sling and shot.
Stone Troll for CL 24, Dex to 18/20.
Kill Grishnakh easily for a unique flail (3d6). Well, well, what's this? The Flail, (self note, should be Warhammer), of Throt! An excellent weapon for a dwarven hero; may I live up to the rotund fame of great Throt.

DL 20 on turn 34652, Luck again.
More pack space issues, I've now given up on ?Phase, !Boldness, =SustVitality, and discarded ?*ID* and -*Remove Curse* since I have the spells.
            Swap "SlowDig for Fortune +2.
Learning a lot of flavors now I have easy ID.
            Steamroll Nugrush.

DL 21 on turn 36387. Special - see a tasty orc pit.
Find Dethanc on the floor, and take Nimthanc from some orcs but discard both. Use an =Accuracy, though, in place of =Damage which I have more than enough of.
Equip takes a thrashing from water hounds before I remember I have the ring of Acid!
            Steamroll Uldor.
2H Ogre for CL 25. Dex to 18/20.

DL 22 on turn 39170. Con. I now have 3 sets of excellent bolts.
Kill Draebor with a bit of work.
More pack woes, give up on !Heroism and _Holiness.

DL 23 on turn 42951. Special level, can see a small vault.
Attack the vault. Find Mordenkainen's Faithful Compendium! Teleport Away at 50%, CCW, and eventually Mass ID. Consider and reject =Int +3.
Another similar vault right next to it. Kill Lokkak for CL 26 (Con to 18/30) and Gondricam, which I discard.
Find the Glaive of Pain! Surprisingly I can wield it; I shouldn't be able to (maintainer note, why is it not 2H?) Anyway, it's not as good as Throt, I don't think.

DL 24 through 27 pass pretty quickly. I'm feeling very comfortable at this depth.
Find Beorn and pretty much just duke it out with him. Queen Ant appears and is annoying.
Find Camlost, the cursed gauntlets of Beren, (-12, -12). We dwarves know how to make better gauntlets than these! Abandon them, and Orcrist too.
Swap up from a good light crossbow to an average heavy crossbow.

DL 28 on turn 49647. Per.
AH, some credible monsters. Three ancient dragons, a nether wraith, enchantress and death quasit all show up - most just wandering round, some in a small nearby vault. Then Ardomar, King of Cardolan.
I hack into the mob, but am rudely interrupted by a trapdoor.

            DL 30 on turn 52000.
Special level, seems par for the course!
Find Unique shoes. It's Dal-i-thalion, for 5 Agi, RChaos and RNether. Much better than my randart shoes from DL 1.
Getting a lot of mileage out of stat-swap potions these days - pumping combat stats at the expense of Stealth, Perception and Wisdom.
Continue down rather than fighting Maedhros.

            DL 31, DL 32 on turn 53018.
            Adunaphel and Cerevas are visible.
Fight Adunaphel and feel nervous for the first time in a while. Losing HP, Per and XP at quite a rate. Adunaphel doesn't drop much, either... but Cerevas drops the long lost boots of my kinsman Thror. I want these greatly, but while in the process of picking them up I get mobbed by summoning demons and kicked around by tengus. It takes me some time to deal with the infernal horde, but I finally prevail, and equip myself in kingly mien. I have Mithril Plate and the boots of Thror, which of course no dwarf could turn down, even though the cost is two high resists from Dal-i-thalion.

DL 33 on turn 55246. Special feeling.
Ranger chieftain for CL 30 (Agi -> 18/20). Hey, those dudes do quite a bit of damage.
Find Illitha and damn near one-shot her. Vile elf-wench!
Bill, Bert and Tom show up in a forest, you can guess what happens to them.
... Ugh! Special feeling was a hound pit. Leave rapidly.

DL 34 at 57567. And... a special feeling, as usual!

It grieves me to report that Ferrin has met his doom.

At last report, Ferrin was just reaching the point where ancient dragons were becoming common. He slew several with little difficulty, even managing to kill Kavlax the Many-Headed and Scatha the Worm, but on the next level, he was beset by an Ancient Black (killed), a drolem (teleported away), a Winged Horror (teleported away), and was just sitting down to quaff some ale, heal up and reflect on his adventures, when an Ancient Gold came around a corner and killed him with a blast of sound. (Roared so loudly it gave him a heart attack?)

Truly YASD for this valiant dwarf, but all must perish sooner or later.

Ferrin's master Antoine is left with several new actions on his to-do list:

              - figure out why dwarves can wield 'long weapon' artifacts like the Glaive of Pain - they should not be able to
              - put in more branded weapons, which seem to have been rebalanced to extinction
              - make some spells less available to 'warrior types' (CCW, Teleport Away, Enchant Armor)
              - make Colluin weaker or deeper
              - make all !Restore a bit less common, and !Restoration a lot deeper
              - find what has happened to my favorite new bad guy the 'Crawling infestation'.

              A.
