Depends what you're after? One of the simplest Bruisers to play is the spirit troll from the monster mode. It'll eventually get pass wall & has good melee/hps. I'd recomend fearless for personality, mighty will give you horrible fail rates on teleport scrolls. Just about anything works in a rogue but the bigger rogues are easier (good melee/decent stealth). Otherwise just try matching the stat bonus for the race with the stat bonus for the class & it'll usually work out. Just remember anything with low hps is harder (low Life Rating or +BHP).

Hugo will tell you to play a Tonberry . Vampire is still good if you don't mind the xp penality & light problems. I like beastman for chaos warriors which'll get you extra mutations & good melee but doesn't cast so well. Any of the super-races (demi-god, draconian, half-titans etc.) will be good because they are good at everything. I often don't worry too much about race on a chaos warrior because half the time I play them my chaos patron ends up polymorphing me anyway.

Bronze for confusion breathe+resist. Or black for a bigger bruiser, less enemies resist acid then fire/cold. They're all good but perhaps avoid Shadow which is weakest & Green (too many enemies resist poison). Looking at the list I missed Crystal. They are pretty powerful & eventually get reflection which is very strong.

Don't get too attached to your starting race if you play chaos warrior. It's pretty common to have yourself race-polymorphed by your chaos-patron at least once on level up.

                Spoiler
                HTML Code:
Chardros is the only patron that doesn't polymorph players
My best try at PosChengband 7.0.0's nightmare-mode on Angband.live:

Pseudodragon used to be ridiculously strong back in the days of Posband. Wallwalking makes spell damage useless, and escapes trivial. No idea if this is still the case. Nevertheless, killing Morgoth was very difficult. (Shadow dragon is similar, but breathes cold/nether, which most things resist at least partly.)

It seems like classes, personalities and races have features that aren't covered by the in-game documentation. I can't vouch for it's veracity, but this is the closest thing I could find to a poschengband wiki: https://pastebin.com/ZLZZz45j
