    Editing Trump School of Magic

Forgive my question, but I was wondering if there is some way for me to edit the Spell Schools in POSChengband, or any other *variant for that matter. Let me clarify...

I absolutely cannot stand having a School of Magic called Trump. And please, before someone goes on about something political, this has nothing to do with politics in ANY way. I simply find the name to be silly, whereas something like Conjuration would be so much more acceptable in my mind.

Anyway, I know it does not detract from the playing of this game or any of the Angband variants, but it just crawls my skin when I go through a list of spells, only to find this silly name (in my opinion) as a School of Magic.

Thank you for any assistance that you may offer. Well, other than "get over it"

    Have a blessed day,

You will need to edit the source and re-compile. If you have some way of searching through all the files (linux, Visual Studio, etc) you could just search for Trump or even do a find and replace (I find 126 lines with "Trump" but I am looking through a modified source so your case may be somewhat different).

Case is important, you probably want to replace Trump with Conjuration but TRUMP with CONJURATION and "trump" with "conjuration".

If it helps any, the original source of the name (Zelazny's Amber fantasy novels) was referring to "trump cards" in card games. I believe that in-game the spellbooks are literally supposed to be decks of magical cards that you use to cast spells.

Excellent! Now I will go about figuring out the process of the editing and compiling thing that you were referring to... which shouldn't be too difficult, right?

As far as the Trump School of Magic being likened to Trump Cards... that is interesting. I honestly had not thought about it that way. But still, for some reason, it just looks silly to me in my *band games.

Thank you you for the assistance and for pointing me in a direction.

if it can help you with the imagining of the theme (whether to not change the name, or to change it to something that still fits, like "Tarot" or something), here are a couple of sites that quote relevant parts of the books:

http://skyseastone.net/ancient_powers/trump.html (intended as a helper for the roleplaying game based on the books, but has some good quotes)
http://www.swordandmug.us/Corwin/trumps.htm description of some of the trumps

            Thank you.

It looks like I may have to take the advice of re-thinking my issues and reasoning behind my dislike of the name, if for no other reason than editing and re-compiling the files seems to be outside of my limited knowledge and skill set.

            Well... that bites

Still, I do truly appreciate the assistance and direction.

Seriously though -- read the Amber books. They're great.

The first 5 are distinctly better than the second 5 though. I'm not saying that Merlin's adventure isn't a decent read, but Corwin's has considerably tighter plotting.

Not surprising given that (IIRC) the second series was originally serialized in a magazine, not written for a book publisher.

The second series makes up for it by having a sentient magic computer and a computer scientist as the main character. (But yeah the first five are my favorite.)
