Unangband Question

OK, I have started playing Unangband and like it so far. But I am totally stuck. I killed the Willow King in the Old Forest and got to Bombadill's house; a message says "your reward is at Goldberry's fountain" but I can't get in there because of the "no trespassing" sign. Bombadill is hanging around doing nothing and the interface says he's an ally but I don't seem to be able to do anything with him except [O]ffer him an object. Should I have some kind of special item to give him or what? Help.

When he's around, you can't get in Berry's fountain. Try night time, or spend the day in the dungeon, or just kill him.

Thanks. I think I'll wait for night. I can't bear the thought of killing Tom Bombadil (but there are those annoying songs...)
