playing Unangband for the first time

So I'm playing un for the first time on my linux machine I like the main screen interface I think it is x11, very nice acii interface. It took me a while to figure out what all the terrain was, but am starting to get used to it, I like the interesting dungeons. I am also playing in a lord of the rings campaign, a little confusing at first but am starting to enjoy it, ( never done this in a band before) I always play dungeons only, but after this I might have to try others that have this idea..Faangband as well only played dungeons on that one as well. So I think I figured out most of how the game works however one thing continues to elude me..how do you identify rings, in un? I assume this is for all jewelry, is it id by use or am I missing something, identify, sense, guage magic, seems to ignore jewelry completly. this is unangband 0.6.4b by the way.

My Un is rusty, but I think stores will sell you a service of identify, and you can find and buy just straight up identify scrolls... but, yeah, I agree, there are a lot of odd pseud-id scrolls. I recall some things do id over time, but it seemed a bit spotty.

Edit: Oh, you mentioned identify scrolls... huh. I don't recall them ignoring jewelry.

I was able to use an identify scroll to identify 1 ring of resist fire however it totaly ignored the other ring I was wearing. Another confusing thing is that I turned on birth- no need to identify, and birth- know artifact, ego item, however I am still having to identify good or unusual items. I also have birth- no selling to stores, yet I am still selling stuff..so this seems broken.

This was my experience with Un. It has a ton of stuff in it, but a lot of it is broken in the current release as far as I can tell. Sticking to meleeing dudes and pretending most of everything doesn't exist seemed to be the least disappointing strategy.

It's kind of sad because the episodic structure and the level design is pretty fun otherwise.

I think squelch would be a nice option here, yeah I agree Debo, sometimes monsters drop items and the item completly dissapears, some things auto-identify and other things don't, I am going to plow away with my Dwarf Warrior and see how far I can ride this bicycle, I think I will try FA's campaighn style next.

If you get to the top of Edoras and kill Theoden, don't take the stairs. Just sayin...

made it to the bottom of the barrow downs and killed the Wraith of Carolan I think the guardian and won..however finding some great items I explored further and ran into a giant wolf tick, which made my character afraid and petrified to move, I drunk 5 potions of heroism and no remove fear despite the description telling me I am feeling bold, ended up getting killed because could not move, level 21 warrior petrified by fear, sheesh a bit of a dissapointing end really, and also a little buggy, can't fight and can't move=death despite the potions of heroism/beserk strength. are their any versions that don't seem quite so buggy? I like the game alot, but it needs some work to really make it shine.

Un 0.6.2 gold2 seemed to be a bit more promising with a "cleaner" dungeon, and nearly the same options, so I'm going to give that a try.
