What would you say is the most frightening close call your character ever had in ANY variant (even Vanilla)?
This encounter I had in PosChengband 2.0.3, while being an Eldrak, takes the cake by far:
Scatha is NO joke! All this happened before I switched to King Arthur's body.

Had an *INSANE* close call with Scatha the Worm at Angband 43. Crazy dude breathed VERY damaging COLD (against my 1x Cold Resistance) that dropped my HP from GREEN full health (above 400) to RED double-digits and kicked me out of the Eldrak, AND caused some of my equipment to drop into the floor.
Fortunately, I was still alive, but was struggling to figure out what to do. First, I teleported away. Then, I picked up the corpse of and turned into a Giant red ant -> then young red dragon. I lured Scatha away from the dropped equipment, which was ALSO near Phase Spiders. Then, I sought to locate the dropped stuff, wore the Amulet of Anti-Teleportation, picked up the stuff, and recalled OUT of there in time!"
