I can't say if it is harder or easier. It's different. 4GAI + conical breath weapons + hydras & coin pits (greed gets me usually) and quests all make it so different that at first it might feel harder, but playing with general survival rules it's just as beatable as vanilla.

hmm... http://forum.nppangband.org/ isn't taking new registrations, so can't post over there.

playing the comp, ran into smeagol, clobbered him without being hit or robbed and poofed. This is a bug, right?

That's because the site was completely overrun by spammers, and it was taking me 20+ minutes a day to clear them out. I will manually set up an account for anyone who wants one. I also respond to anything posted on oook as well.

Smeagol robbed me several times in my game, so I know he works right. Maybe you just got extremely lucky.

Also, somebody posted this question on a character dump (and now I can't find it to answer it there):

How does the game decide now many levels to include in between quests:

It starts with the player's max depth. Then it either adds 2 or 3 levels (50% chance of each). The decision to add either 2 or 3 levels is decided when the player chose thier current quest, so it can't be scummed. I guess that means for the sake of this comp that one player might get a couple more quests than another over the course of a game.

The only exception are levels 99 and 100. If the next quest level would be the Morgoth or Sauron level, then no quests are offered.

Just encountered my first dragon armor mimic....very tough. I didn't try to fight it because it almost killed me.
