Honestly I stopped reading around the 12th book...and I read them when they originally were released in the US in the late 80's. Yes I'm old. Steve Jackson's Sorcery books would be another great series to base a variant on...but I'd base it off of FA since those books felt magic heavy.

Agreed that more stuff along the lines of Lone Wolf and such would be swell. Shoot, the closest there has been in years was the Fighting Fantasy RPG on the DS that was kind of a Hexen'ish thing with more RPG trappings.

        I LOVED Sorcery!!

Also, there was an obscure series called DuelMaster which I really enjoyed, especially the one titled "Challenge of the Magi"
Glaurung, Father of the Dragons says, 'You cannot avoid the ballyhack.'

The Website Project Aon has dedicated itself to providing all of the Lone Wolf books online for free. I highly suggest bopping over there and reliving the glory days.

To correct my earlier post it wad the dark god Naar that was the baddy at the end, for anyone interested on the project aon website their is an emmulator called seventh sense that you can download that runs a program to your desktop where you can download the books and it incorporates the game artwork and turns the books into a pkayable campaign with save options, definently the way to play these books short of just buying them.

Honestly Sorcery was the best. The British Steve Jackson just wrote cool stuff. Maybe one of these days I'll learn to code and try to make a variant....Highly unlikely though.

                      Also:
                      FAAngband
                      Hengband
TOME 2 (tome4 is not a variant, tome 3 is vaporware I think)

Sil is my #1 variant, absolutely hands-down.

                        My runner-ups:
                        Chengband
                        ToME 2.x

If I'm offline I'm probably in the middle of maintaining Gentoo or something-Linux or other.

Now that we're almost in 2015, I'd have that say that PosChengband is, by far, my most favorite variant of all tiime.

Another reason why PosChengband remains my all-time-favorite:
Weapons that activate to Summon Cyberdemon!!

                              *SPOILER warning*

I really loved Z's specialized shops and vast random wilderness, but after playing vanilla 3.5.0 and getting used to all the quality-of-life improvements, dang. I just can't go back, even though my least favorite thing about V is how quickly the town becomes useless. Are there any variants based on 3.5.0 that have an expanded shopping system?
