Same here, but I came horrifyingly close to winning Sang over Christmas.

I tend to switch variants after any decent length game, win or lose.
    Same here, also.

I think its the thought of starting all the way from the beginning. Beyond this, with replay characters, I have a tendency to try too hard to get to equivalent power/depth as quickly as possible, which often means death by BSV or something.
    You sold a Broken Sword (1d2) (-2,-4) {average} (j) for 1 gold.
    The shopkeeper howls in agony!
You say "Dude, the clue is in the name...".

I've only won Steamband, as a Steammecha Adventurer (kinda hard to lose with that combo). I also almost won again as a British Adventurer, but got slammed with several rockets, courtesy of those replicating rocket-shooting automata, on Fu Manchu's level.

I've been playing Angband and variants for over 10 years, and never gotten much past level 70 or so. Closest I had to a win was a Draconian Chaos Warrior in ZAngband, who got down to about level 80 before "dying" of a corrupted save file.
I've gotten close in ToME as well, but always do something stupid to get myself killed.
Currently I'm back to Angband, trying to win with a Priest. Its still early, but I'm playing cautious. I really want that win now!

I've been playing...off and on maybe 5 years..not sure. I too have yet to beat one. Usually I get an ego and then something shows me just how much of a bad arse I really am.

One time in Tome, during one of my best runs, I thought I would play with a Greater Kracken. I think thats what it was. Yeah, that went well...

This is what keeps me hooked on roguelikes, the difficulty and not really being able to play them carelessly, among other reasons.

Hehe, after 7 or 8 years of playing vanilla and O ive still failed to get even a decent looking character
          You have found a trap!
You fall through the trap door.
You have a superb feeling about this level.
It breathes on you. You die -more-
