    Sangband Level 6 Bug

I'm not sure if this forum is the appropriate place to post this, but it appears that camlost is the person to talk to about Sangband.

On one occasion, I went downstairs from level 5 and wound up on level 7, not level 6. On another occasion, I used a Scroll of Word of Recall to go back to town from level 6, did some shopping, used another Scroll of Word of Recall, and wound up on level 7.

It's like sometimes level 6 just isn't there. It displays "Level 7" at the side.

I have video of both of these occurrences. The first time is at 0:34 in http://youtu.be/R-0YcKan4gU . The second time, I returned to town from Level 6 in one video (http://youtu.be/O-x59KKcb0Q), did shopping that I didn't record, and then would up Word of Recalled to level 7 early in the next video (http://youtu.be/0hcMQR-AdxQ).

Has anyone else had this happen? It only seems to happen on level 6, but I think level 7 is the deepest I've been. It might potentially happen on other levels as well.

It may be that there's some reason for it, but I don't understand what that could be.

I don't know if SAngband has them, but some variants have shafts that act like staircases, but take you up or down 2 levels at a time. They're usually colored differently from staircases and should have a different description if you 'l'ook at them.

That might be what happened the first time. I believe I've seen some stairs that were different colors, though I'm not sure if they're the ones I went down.

But the second time, I was on level 6, word of recalled back to town, and later word of recalled back to the dungeon and wound up on level 7.

But isn't that because your recall depth was level 7?

Sangband does indeed have shafts which go up/down two levels - they're brown, to distinguish them from normal white staircases.

Does Word of Recall send you back to the maximum depth you've been to? I had assumed that it sent you back to the last dungeon level you were on even if it wasn't the deepest you had been to.

I think that's how town portals worked in Diablo. Open one to go to town, then walk back into it to get back to the dungeon.

I thought Word of Recall would take me to where I came from, but I guess maximum depth makes more sense. That way, you can walk back up stairs to get to town and still get back to the maximum depth you've been to.

So it looks like it's not the game that's buggy, just my perception of the game.

When you recall back from shallower depth than your max depth you are given chance to change that recall depth. You probably missed that one.

AFAIK Sangband doesn't do that, just like O.

                1) Brown staircases are shafts that change you two levels instead of one.
                2) WoR returns you to the deepest you've gone (no chance of resetting recall depth)

Watching the first video in 720p, it was pretty clear that the staircase you took was brown (~0:10).

                  Other thoughts relating to videos

                  1) Your trees and water look weird (~3:35). That's really what they look like on your screen? I seem to recall that that's a bug with Asian character support on Windows. I wish I knew a good way to fix that (and still use the nice characters). Also the columns look weird later.

                  2) You may wish to turn up the base delay factor. It will show your missile attacks and spells flying through the air.

                  3) You don't ever run. Is that to avoid confusing people watching the video? It's a really important skill to learn.

                  4) Use the 'n' command to repeat an action. Like when you are firing shots at the green mold.

                  5) My last hint is that a lot of monsters come in groups (like snaga and most orcs). Until you're more powerful (especially in melee), it's better to take them in a hallway, and get there before the other monsters show up (novice mages).

P.S. Ok, not quite last: you should read up and consider the oath of sorcery, accessible on the wizardry skill

P.P.S. You should cast "Detect Monsters" more often. Knowledge is power.

I've just turned it up. I set it to 15, but I haven't checked the results yet. Video 37 will be the first one with the change.

I wasn't aware this was possible. I looked it up and will try it out.

                    I'll try that too.

Sometime I do that. And sometimes I use Stinking Cloud. I've survived so far, though there were some close calls.

I'm very wary of taking the oath because it lowers my HP, and I'm not sure by how much.

That's good advice. Lately, I've been detecting treasure, objects, doors and stairs, and even magic mapping sometimes. I had completely forgotten about detect monsters even though that's arguably the most important.
