    Advanced Angband

I've had this idea for a while now, to create an advanced version of the original angband, but taking it way further.

[Edit: I do not intend to create a new Angband from scratch, instead I´d like to use the current Angband and develop it further]

    A few examples of additions/improvements:

The surface village would only be randomized at the start of a new character, and stay that way until that character is dead. The start of another character would produce a new village setup and so on.

New buildings in the village: tavern, jail, guardhouse, alchemyst (where the player may buy customized items)

More birth options, using background points, receiving gifts/geas at player creation etc.

I'd like to see more interaction with the npc's and intelligent monsters of the dungeon, giving the player an aura of either good or evil, depending on the actions taken in the past. Good aura would upset evil creatures and the other way around.

Player is able to hire sidekicks, fighting along the player until either dead or injured up to a certain point before returning to the surface.

Player may encounter other "good" npc's in the dungeon that won't always attack the player, but giving the player the opportunity to "hire" them to fight as a sidekick.

Tasks and smaller quests given to the player in a tavern on the surface etc, providing money, items, experience when completed.

More magical items, adding more spice to the game (single use items such as "Orb of smoke", "Mighty arrow of explosion", "Shuriken of ice" etc)

More evil creature items (of ogre, of orc, of evil wizard, of evil priest etc) but still usable by the player (affecting his aura )

Spells learned would go into a single spellbook, instead of having to carry around 8 of them, finding new spells through either dropped spellbooks or magical scrolls.

And of course, the graphics and UI would get an overhaul, bringing the game into 2011, using PNG tiles.

I'm a game designer and digital artist, but not a skilled programmer, that is why I'm posting this thread here. I would need a skilled programmer or two to work on this free project, I won't be making any money off of it and neither would you, unless we receive donations from kind souls out there.

Does this game sound like a great idea, and are you a skilled programmer wanting to be part of it? Do let me know!

Do check out my tiles thread here:

You wouldn't rather add some of these features to Angband or one of the existing variants?

I thought that was to be understood from the text above. I didn´t intend to recreate angband, instead upgrade it, much like we´re doing with ToME these days. I don´t want to remove the great feel it gives to play todays angband, just give it some additions, as listed in my suggestions for improvements.

It´s been a while since I started posting tiles for a new tileset on here, but it seems people are either busy doing their own projects or they´re caught up for other reasons. I never demanded for anyone to upgrade Angband so my tiles could fit in, that´s why I´m asking here for help to create a new version of it, to fit PNG graphics + other upgrades. If the interest is zero, I´ll drop my tileproject for Angband, and instead focus on doing graphics for other games.

I feel confident that people will do whatever is necessary to implement your tiles - everyone is wowed by the quality of your work.

What I meant in my earlier post, is that you seem to be imagining the creation of a new variant "Advanced Angband", or "AAngband" if you will. I would think it would be better to get your ideas into an existing game such as DaJ or NPP or V - in which case you don't need new coders, just buy-in from the relevant variant maintainer.

That was my idea, to implement my suggestions into the current Angband, just that I called it "Advanced Angband" in the thread due to the difference it would have after the various additions. The game would be mostly the same as before, just with my suggested additions. It could still be named Angband if the rightful owners to that version had nothing against the upgrades to it.

Indeed. Just want to apologise on behalf of the devteam: if we had the skills to add PNG support and do full support for your tiles, we would do it immediately. Unfortunately you have hit upon an area of the game where none of those of us currently active has the necessary expertise - takkaria probably does, and he is indeed very busy with RL right now.

But he's given you a commitment for less than 12 months .... ;-)

No need to apologize, if it can´t be done, it can´t be done
