[Entro] Anti-magic Shell - what is it?

I just picked up a randart that "produces an anti-magic shell". What does that do? I'm a warrior, so I won't be doing magic anyway... but does it prevent monsters from doing magic also?

Does it prevent me from using magic devices or scrolls or innate abilities?

    Thanks in advance!

Prevents you from casting magic. Does not prevent monsters from casting magic. You can still use devices etc. It is a negative mod for most classes, but for warriors and berserker it is actually a very useful mod as it raises your saving throw a lot. If you don't use magic you'll really want it in your end game kit.

        Hi,

I've recently been playing magic-eaters, and finally managed to get one at CL50, with everybody but a plain gold ring and some SoC *dead*.
(playing Heng 1.6.2, and apart from my spectrezerker, which isn't a real *win*, it's my first char reaching the bad guy)

But it seems I made a terrible mistake : I trashed "Terror mask" to my museum, while I now realize that helms with (+18, +18) are not that common, and that an AMS doesn't prevent me from drinking healing, *healing* or life, or to read ?oTP or ?o*destruction*, but could have given me a nice... ? 95% saving throw, isn't it ?

I wonder what spells i could use against the SoC.. mana storm ? seem to suck a little imo, i'm not sure it's better than a good melee. Rockets seems quite cool, as I don't think he resists Sh, but even my current 568 ringil averages damages would be better.. and I guess SoC is evil, which raises my output a little more.

        My questions are :
        About AMS :
-Shouldn't I have kept it for my final fight ? What spells am I supposed to *need* that I can's get with potions or scrools against him ?

-What does AMS's saving throw protect me from ? Hand of doom ? (brr) Mortal wounds ? Something else, like eldritch horror ?

Off "AMS" topic, but I don't really know where I should ask thoses questions :
-I'm actually trying to find a Power DSM, but I started looking for it when I reached CL50, and reached 99.999.999 XP today. After killing 4 or 5 babbles, 2 GCWADL, 3 golden angel, and encountering twice the plain gold ring in vaults (sauron dropped me the real one as Dlvl88 quest reward, but I don't even wield it, as I prefer my (+0, +1), +3 extra attacks), I really am starting to wonder if PDSM exist ! I'm tired of stacking ?oAC, !oInvu and other stuff like that, I want a PDSM !!! should I give up ? (I conceded that I would accept a =oLP *AND* master of the universe instead, but I think I'll find a PDSM before it ^^). How often do ppl find this kind of stuff ? I recently read some dump where someone drops one at DL37 or something like that, on Druaga :'( :'( :'(

-Yes, my auto-scummer is enabled, but does it really have any effect at such depth ? Everytime I read an Acquirement, I get crap. If autoscummer has similar limitations, I doubt it helps a lot (I often have vaults or pits, but I must say I found several 1-screen-levels with no great enemy or stuff in it.. weird)

-Should I wield the crappy ring ? I played most of my mid to late game with 1 or 2 immunities, which is very comfortable, but they never seemed to be *really* useful, and a !oResistance does enough job usually, without beeing permanently cursed. As my actual set doesn't aggravate, isn't tyCursed, and does more damages, I have some doubts... do ppl systematically wield it ?

-And what is that activation for "bizarre things" ? Tycurse ?
-Also, what is frakir's "strangling attack" ? I didn't understand when I tried it.

-My race is Half titan, for the HP. My curent char is magic-eater n°21; n°10 reached oberon and was one-shot with about 900 hp remaining by "Oberon invokes the hand of doom, and a mana storm. Dump the screep ? ". I don't remember how much, but I had more speed than him, like +10 or +15.
*HOW*, can ppl win with shrewd high-mages spectres of chaos ? Even with a great speed, I don't understand how I could resist to things like that, or "xxxxx summons ancients dragons, dragon1 breathes for 400 dmg, dragon2 does the same, dump the screen ? " I read somewhere that damages are divided by 2 when you're in a wall, but... it that "The key" to survive at high level ? What for non-spectre non-craft-or-death players with a fragile race (sprite, yeek, human, or any non-über one) and class ?

-What are the ?oMundanity useful for (except removing the crap ring or a massive iron crown ?) Selling cursed =oSpeed reworked into +0 is fun, but doesn't seem very useful.

-Are the damages from auras (e.g. incandescent light) of any use in lategame ? I have no idea if the damages are fixed or depends on your stats/lvl. Same for enemies with auras : is it completely negligible ? does it destroy my stuff when I attack them ? If yes, I never noticed it

-I recently created some custom 8x8 graphics for my personnal use, goal : every non-unique monster must have it's graphic, so that things I see are clear. I also made some item graphics, such as dragon boots/gloves, or incandescent light. anyone interrested ? Has anyone else, with more drawing skills than me (any skill would be more than mine ^^) already done it for Heng 1.x.y or entro ?

Thanks for reading me, and btw, in advance, for your answers.

Wow, that's one old topic you found there. I never played a magic eater, but I hear it is one of the harder classes to play. That said, there is nothing wrong with killing the serpent in melee if you do more damage this way (and with a +3 ring you will likely do more damage that way)

Your death against Oberon sounds like a roll of bad luck. It is possible for him to double move you even if you are faster, but it is rare. Don't be afraid of attacking the Serpent, it will most likely not happen again. This is also why it is not required to be a wall mover to win.

Antimagic stops all spells that allow a saving throw, basicly anything that can produce the message "you resist the effect". This includes cause wounds and should include hands of doom as well. However the biggest use is probably against the death curse (TYcurse) when the amberites die, which can paralize you even with free action. Also see http://www.zangband.org/spoilers/tycurse.txt Details of the curse might have been changed (for the better or worse) in Heng.

It is not necessary to have antimagic for the serpent, though it is a help if you don't plan on using magic yourself.

For eldritch horrors you need resChaos.

Bizarre things is manabolt/storm/drain stats I think. I don't think it is usefull but you might try it just for fun, it won't kill you outright

You haven't posted a dump but if you reached 99mil exp you are very likely ready to kill the serpent. Just take all your potions and slay that thing

Oh and PDSM do exist, but finding one on 37 is extremly lucky. Most game end without you finding one of those

"Oberon invokes the hand of doom, and a mana storm. Dump the screen?". I don't remember how much, but I had more speed than him, like +10 or +15.
Yeah, that happens from time to time. Part of the fun of heng/entro IMHO. No win ... and I mean *no* win ... is ever a foregone conclusion. Often, it is better to just win as quick as possible, once you know what is required.

Shouldn't I have kept it [Terror Mask] for my final fight ? What spells am I supposed to *need* that I can's get with potions or scrools against him ?
Well, I wouldn't go pure melee (meaning Terror Mask) for the final battle personally, but I'm sure it can be done. Personally, I'd like to be able to use *destruction* and healing at a minimum. If your melee is better than your offensive spells, that is fine, but you still might want to toss a few rockets at the Serpent while he approaches. The thing about damage from a distance is that your foe is quite likely to spend his energy charging you rather than pummeling you with deadly spells, or his fists, which he will be quite happy to do every round once he gets next to you.

I'm actually trying to find a Power DSM, but I started looking for it when I reached CL50, and reached 99.999.999 XP today.
PDSM is quite rare. Figure on something like one winner in 50 might find a suit. Of course, if you play long enough one will come up. Kill the Serpent, dive to DL127, and recall scum. Use your pickup preferences to indicate a desire for PDSM, and map mode to tell you quickly if one is present. Then spend 3 or 4 hours doing nothing but recalling back and forth between town. I think you'll get one that way

Should I wield the crappy ring?
If you like ... it can kill you though. Its AFC can turn you into a statue, surround you with high level monsters, and ... well, its a sad way to go But if you put it on immediately before the Serpent, then it is pretty safe.

Wow, that's one old topic you found there.
For a minute, I thought Djabanete was playing human warriors in Entroband again!

Good luck, and post your dump so we can see!

              My connection is back !
OMG, Chris himself answered to my Thread, I feel my luck is turning !

              @Matthias
"For eldritch horrors you need resChaos."
Hmm.. Eldritch horror is when lovecraft's monster blast my sanity isn't it ? e.g. "You behold the horrible visage of the ####" -> you feel very stupid, naive, become a coward and you turn moronic (or, without RChaos, may be confused/hallucinated).
I didn't found how to prevent the moronic/coward part. I guess saving throw is the only way ? I'm tired of going to Zul -.-

Btw, the PDSM I was speaking of was a Chris drop, at Dlvl 32, 37 was Clvl -- Sigh :|

              @Chris
Good, seems everyone will agree: my char was unlucky. (If I tought it was always like that, I wouldn't have restarted new ones, and would even have considered changing variant for something winnable)

About not wielding Terror mask, I like the fact that you don't advise me to go pure melee (hey, I'm supposed to be a caster ! I wanna cast !) but how can I know my real melee damages ? I didn't "design a winning set" yet, but I seem to always have at least 500 damages, so if I wield some cool stuff like Harness of hell, I think I can reach 700 or 800 easily. Doesn't AC reduce damages in Heng ? With the serpent's 175 or 200, I wouldn't be surprised to learn than 700 "average damages" are 350 real damages.
Also, I don't think "average damages" count my miss percentage (that, I can get by visiting the weaponmaster)

You say that when fighting monster using ranged attacks is pretty cool -> should I use scrolls of phase door ? I did it between Clvl 1 and 30 but then, I figured melee was much more efficient, and dropped them.

About PDSM.. well, getting one for my fight again the big boss was my initial goal, but rather because "I want to find one !!!" than because I tought I need it. I actually have many nice armors (no jacket, tough), but this includes 2 (randart) balance DSM, and many rather cool things.. If my patience runs out (scumming lvl 100 to 97 hasn't been very efficient for the moment), or if I manage to die to the plain gold ring or a metal babble, I'll skip it.
Ho, and you didn't tell me : do some char find Ring of lordly protection *AND* master of the universe ? I'm not planning to find one at all, but when I see how hard it is to find randart amulets/rings (or just good egos), I think it might be even harder to get than "just" a PDSM ^^.

I'm happy to learn than the curse can kill you. On the one hand... Wielding the ring just before the serpent fight would typically be the kind of moves I'd make. On the other, I would want to remove it just after, which implies using one of those terrible scrolls of mundanity. And since I love collecting great items (I just can't imagine I could destroy such a lovely ring, even if I prefer keeping it in my home than on my hand), I probably just won't wield it (maybe on some copy of my save... "just to try it" but I don't think it will change my life. ... or maybe on my next char if that one manages to die with this one in the Soc fight...)

Old topic.. old topic... ok, I maybe should have created a new one, but this one was the only relevant I found with my search using the keyword "shell" (damn tortoise-shell amulets and shell commands !)
So I preferred completing it, which I tought was better. I just added a little more questions than I initially tought I would .

Oh, and about questions : I got one really triturating my mind : does anyone know if it is possible to lose undiscovered artefacts using preserve mode ?
e.g. what if a monster picks up a generated art, and you leave his level ? What if instead of leaving the level, you *destruct* or genocide/annihilate the monster ? If you directly *destruct* the object ?
Since I recently looked a little into the code and saw many comments like "---Hack---" or "---terrible hack---" on 50% of what I read (including some section with object destruction when leaving a level, where preserve_mode was involved), some possible lose of art would't surprise me more than that

              Here's the dump (I didn't know how to make one ~~) !

You'll notice what I meant when I said I like collecting cool stuff.. just take a look at my museum.. :/
I guess I'll lose this habit if I manage to get used to reach a high level with my chars.
My preferred item is probably "Acidic detergent"
EDIT : Post is too long : 54k chars, max is 40k ^^ ok, I'll post my Museum separately...

Note : I'm using a new set : dropped from 194 to 172 AC to max... Wisdom ! also raising dmg from 578 to 632, and getting reflection, +3 speed and a (useless ?) cold aura in the process.

Oh, and I forgot to ask about the "pickup preferences" you speak of, and the use of map mode. I noticed there is an option in map mode to show... food and lights, I think ?
Is that the pickups preferences I should configure somewhere ? I'll probably look for it in heng 1.7.x, which seemed much more convinient for many things, like auto-destroyer configuration (and which I also used to remap some of the new 8x8 gfx I'm designing)

I wanna cast !) but how can I know my real melee damages ? I didn't "design a winning set" yet, but I seem to always have at least 500 damages, so if I wield some cool stuff like Harness of hell, I think I can reach 700 or 800 easily.
Umm ... now that I see how freakin' powerful your character is, you may win any way you like, any time you like I notice you have a nice stockpile of 7 ?ArtifactCreation and 2 really nice diamond edges. Why not try to enchant them? If you pick up Slay Evil, you will have a much better weapon then Ringil. If you are going the Harness route, consider the Falcon Sword of Destruction (but beware the AFC). So yeah, you could win with melee only!

Doesn't AC reduce damages in Heng ? With the serpent's 175 or 200, I wouldn't be surprised to learn than 700 "average damages" are 350 real damages.
I don't think AC helps monsters at all for damage, other than making it harder for you to hit. So don't worry about damage reduction. But do check your accuracy at the Weaponmaster (average the entries for 150 and 200) to figure out how much you will be damaging the Serpent. I would be comfortable with melee if I did 500 damage with 65% accuracy (though it would require a lot of healing). You easily have that beat.

You say that when fighting monster using ranged attacks is pretty cool -> should I use scrolls of phase door ? I did it between Clvl 1 and 30 but then, I figured melee was much more efficient, and dropped them.
I would fight as follows. First prep the level with lots of destruction. Make sure the Unicorn isn't around (though perhaps you killed her already?) Line up the Serpent's approach horizontally, and clear out a line of fire using Stone to Mud, but keep 1 last wall between the two of you as far as possible to break line of sight. Let the Serpent bash thru this wall, and pelt him with Rockets and Disintegrate. Quaff healing as needed as he approaches. If he summons crazy, teleport. If he gets next to you, melee him for a few rounds. Normally, I would teleport when my hp got low and heal up and repeat. Or I might hang for a bit quaffing *Healing* until he summons crazy before teleporting. Usually, it is crazy summoning that makes me flee to setup again. But I just notice you have 210 or so !*Healing* so you can probably just do whatever you like and still win. Just be careful not to die in a single turn if their are too many cyberdemons about or something.

Ho, and you didn't tell me : do some char find Ring of lordly protection *AND* master of the universe ? I'm not planning to find one at all, but when I see how hard it is to find randart amulets/rings (or just good egos), I think it might be even harder to get than "just" a PDSM ^^.
I found a Master of the Universe ring once only. It is nice, but I wouldn't spend the rest of your life looking for one! Actually, its main power is its activation, but with Dispel Magic, you probably wouldn't even want to use it. A +3 attack ring is much better.

If preserve mode is on, you don't lose artifacts until you identify them. Nobody will pick them up. And if you *destruct* unidentified artifacts, they can always be regenerated. Though some items are so rare that this might be unlikely ...

                    Here's the dump (I didn't know how to make one ~~) !
Nice ... Makes me want to play ... must ... resist ...

Oh, and I forgot to ask about the "pickup preferences" you speak of, and the use of map mode. I noticed there is an option in map mode to show... food and lights, I think ?
Press '_' to enter activate pickup preferences. You will get an editor with lots of examples to learn from. It is rather complex and has a bit of a learning curve, but just spend some time reading the examples. Any wanted item will automatically appear in map mode. Press 'M' to enter map mode. Wanted objects will be displayed. Press 'M' again and their names will appear on the left hand side. So, if you want PDSM, add a line like
                    Power Dragon
to the file. I tried to attach mine, but oook rejected it

                    Good Luck,
                    --Chris

This made me laugh. I got news for you pal, I never stopped!

...But I haven't won again either, because I always screw up. Monsters are not calibrated with Vanilla town in mind. Levels 40-60 are brutal. (No Sting/Boots/cloning loot).

Also I don't devote that much time to it anymore

@EvilPotato: Damn... Your home and museum contents are ridiculous. I've never seen so many artifacts in one place. I suggest you kill the serpent slowly by throwing randarts and Rings of Speed at him... although the more conventional Ringil beatdown would probably work just fine.

Glad to learn I'm freakin' powerful ! Btw, considering how much time I wandered in the dungeon, it doesn't really surprise me ~~
That's the result of having my previous character shot by Oberon : that time, I didn't want to waste all by trying the bosses too fast, and.. well, I didn't !

Hmm.. indeed, I didn't use the ?oAC on the diamond edges because after getting the 1st (which was the best one), I tried (copying my savefile) to do it about 10 times, just to see what I was supposed to expect from thoses scrolls, and the first few I got were like this "sustain chr, slay troll", "+1 con, slay human, resist cold". In other words : disappointing crap. I guess having an already-too-good item doesn't help much when using such a scroll.
I don't remember if I already had ringil, but the main reason I didn't turn them to art was that I had big doubts that they would be better than ringil : MUST get slay evil, but I'd personnally also like something like.. +4 speed ? as the +10 speed from Ringil is, imo, much more important than improving my damage output (dps doesn't prevent double moves, speed does). Odds of getting that are quite negligible, I guess
That's why I initially tought I'd keep my unique ?oAC for a dragon shield or helm. Also, I didn't know I could find other in the dungeon.

About monster's AC.. all I know is the 10000 AC from metal babble is quite weird : When I placed 3 hits with ringil or silver chariot.. I did 0 damages. BUT, when using the needle, you get either 1 damage or the instakill. Seems more like hardcoded hacks than just "AC reduction", but what I don't know is if only the needle's damages are a hack, or if babble's AC is also one.

Your serpent's approach is exactly what I wanted to know : the normal one with such a char.
Destructing the level seems quite logical as I need a safe arena for such a fight.
The unicorn.. yep, it's dead (and so is Morgoth !), took me several tries, as I tought it just drained all stats, but discovered it was time... so my first hunt failed. I switched to some better stuff, replacing sustains with mushrooms, and got her the next time. Sound like a little SoC now : destructive, dangerous summons, and a *lot* of HP.
Just, what I don't undesrstand is you say to keep a 'last wall' to break LOS.
I killed at least 2 invincible bastards (I think Atlas, and another melee-only-über-golem-style enemy) just shooting them with ranged attacks in an horizontal corridor and using TP when they got close. then, going back on the same horizontal line and digging if necessary until I got my target at max range -> repeat the proces.
As I dont't remember enemy have a better sight range than players, I think that max sight range is a good replacement for that 'last wall', isn't it ?

For ring of LP and MOTU... I think it's better if such stuff do not get generated too much often. btw, if I find one someday, I'll use it the same way I did with my ZAngband monk which found some crappy shield *with activation for Wraithform* : use it as a switch, activate, put back some true equipement

                        @Djabanete
Rofl... that's so true... I swear if you give me a hacked version with the possibility to throw items directly from museum/home, I'll try it !

Here's a dump of my char just after Oberon (I cut home and museum to keep it short)

I just pwned the beast and all I can say is "ZOMG"!

+55 base speed and 600 damages made it ridiculously *easy*, indeed. (It increased so smoothly that I didn't realize my rising power)
I quaffed 1 or 2 *healing*, and maybe one !olife, but could handle all the other damages with my spells.
Also... I wouldn't have tought his HP drop so fast against rockets (now I *understand* why you told me to use my ranged attacks)
Tough, the horizontal corridor didn't seem very useful as magic-eater, as disintegrate digs enough range in 4 or 5 moves to always have 'arena' conditions.

Hand of doom put me down to 450/1150 hp (a mana storm, and I would have joined my previous char ~~), but it has been the only dangerous thing he did.
He tried to summon twice guardians of dungeons
Summoned a plain gold ring, which I preciousely kept off *destruction*
Summoned 2 or 3 times cyberdemons, which made me teleport
Dispelled every of my haste/resistance/bless/invulnerability (damn, thoses invu potions really seem useless -.- ).
But apart from that, his ranged capacities were quite dubious for a big boss, I admit.
I wasn't very convinced by my melee skills : no sustains, his shatter, the cyberdemons mixed in...

The funny part, then, has been killing the ring : Damn ! that ******* is WAY more powerful than the SoC, isn't it ? !
As I already did encounter it twice in vaults (and nearly died on both occasions), I knew I had to *prevent* it from summoning.
I don't know if there is a particular advised strategy against him, but I decided to use a very common one : the anti-summoning corridor.

Btw, as I couldn't pull it in the corridor... I built a corridor around him (using *destruction*)
Tough, this forced me to go melee, so I've had my stats drained, and was forced to quaff several !oLife, among *healing*.
I was really surprised by the difference of power between the SoC and the one ring, as the ring dropped me to low HP a *lot* of times, even with my insane speed.
As he dropped a bow, I hoped some bug delivered me a Yumi... but no, it was just some (+17 +17) damn short bow... -> Manastormed !

I'm still traumatized by the ammount of damages thoses bastards can deliver in one round : I'm sure my next chars reaching thoses depth will die in terrible conditions

                          ---
                          Edit : I managed to die !
Heaven was quite annoying, with all the permawalls, GWoP ans so, but hell is definitely much more dangerous, with no walls at all.
A teleport in a pit filled with druj and...

Anyway, I don't care : I had achieved most of my objectives : found shiva's jacket, a (dummy) power DSM (a.k.a. bladeturner), even feanor, and had time to kill a true ZSoC ! (The first I found wasn't able to bore trough walls and died in a few shots... normal for a Tanuki.
No tsuchinoko, neither an octopus of Kshitigarbha (he seems useless.. but is rare), but I didn't miss them much, even if their corpses would have been cool in my museum

Congrats! Yeah, the PGR is extremely difficult. Most characters shouldn't bother. Near 600hp on the Mana Storm means a double move will kill you ... It seems the only time I ever kill that guy is with a passwall character that finds it in a GCV. Or sometimes a lazy character with a couple of goodies in hand ...

What's the deal with the Octopus of Kshetc.? I lost a low-level character to one once, but didn't know I was dealing with a rare or unusual monster. Can you redeem its corpse for anything...?
