Sangband - how can I get windowed mode?

I compiled Sangband using Makefile.sdl, and although it works fine, it is fullscreen. I do not like fullscreen. Unfortunately, stuff like "./sangband --help" just starts Sangband, in fullscreen of course.

How can I tell Sangband that I want windowed mode?

Disclaimer: I'm not sure if these instructions work for the SDL version.

Normally Sangband creates config.txt the first time it's run. This file defines the window mode and screen resolutions. You need to find the line which says "Display mode = 0" and change it to "Display mode = 2", if I remember correctly. You might also need to change the size of the window.

You can switch the mode directly in the game:
Preferences -> User Interface -> Display Mode (press '=', then '!').

On my system, though, it doesn't work well. Sangband goes to windowed mode ok, but when I switch to other window and back, it segfaults shortly afterwards.

I'm using gcu front-end instead. I had its problems too (lack of support for extended colours and characters, blinking after each move and so on ...), but those were easier to deal with.
