Already 'fixed' - in that I have implemented a 'more interesting' system for class selection.

I'm really waiting for someone to come up with a robust save-file solution for Angband variants: certainly my experience is that the save file code has a nasty habit of breaking.

Dwarves are changed and kobolds aren't there, so is there any race which makes a good paladin now? kobold paladin is my favorite class/race combo in vanilla.
I noticed hobbits have a plus in wisdom instead of intelligence now, so I tried that.

I chose hobbit paladin this time. I was able to raise my STR 18 and DEX to 17 and my fighting is still awful. Does size make a difference in fighting skill?

Also I went into Farmer Maggot's dungeon with a torch weilded but there was no light coming from it.

stinkin, It happened again. Both times I've saved a game, the saved file didn't work when I tried to load it again.
I think I need to wait for the next version again.

I'm sorry about your savefile problems.

An interesting question. Paladins use INT, WIS and CHA for magic. INT is for number of prayers, so not very important for a class with few prayers. So we need a race with good WIS and CHA. However, prayers are not crucial for a fresh paladin and the magic stats can be raised later on. Since Paladin is melee-based (no big per-level bonuses for throwing and bows and no styles for these) I'd rather choose a race with a good melee skill and fighting stats, such as a Dwarf, Dunadan, Ent or Orc/Troll for a bit dumber Paladin. Actually, anything except the little races is a good start and in the long run perhaps only Giants are not viable due to horrible WIS and CHR. A lot would depend on the style chosen and the overall strategic concept.

Nope, only in charging damage multiplier. But Hobbits have terrible fighting skill, so you have to wait 10 or more levels for the Paladin fighting per-level bonus to cancel this out. In the next version Andrew made the starting skills visible in the birth menu, so no code-diving will be needed.

P.S. Blessed Shadow Fairy Paladins at CL5 melee quite well, see http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7018
They also have lots of HP, which is unnatural IMHO.

You mean race affects skills completely apart from the stat bonuses? I'm very glad he's making the starting skills visible. If race affects skill apart from stats then you should be able to see the skills of the races when you chose. There are so many different ideas about what fairies are like that a player will have no clue what a shadow fairy's starting skills might be.

(It's not like that in Vanilla is it? I just want to make sure.)

I think I'll wait till next version to play, hopefully the savefile thing will be fixed then.

Yes, just like in V, but in V the differences are so tiny nobody notices. Also like in V classes affect starting skills (I guess a bit more than in V so that mages don't start by hacking monsters left and right with their daggers) and then skill per-level bonuses (no per-level bonuses for races).

There are so many different ideas about what fairies are like that a player will have no clue what a shadow fairy's starting skills might be.
You are right. A description of the races would be nice, but first Andrew (with our help) has to actually figure out what the races are to be like.
