    ADOM: Thoughts? Other Similar?

So I tried out a couple variants in the last few days, and I am really getting hooked (and frustrated, LOL!) by ADOM. Aside from a rather lengthy and occasionally frustrating character roller, this is about my favorite variant I've played in a very long time.

The problem is, that I suck really bad, or it's just very, very hard. I have changed my approach a few times now, and I've pretty much figured out how to generate a character that could be successful, but I just get owned in the face randomly a heck of a lot.. Vault on level 6 of the puppy dungeon? *splat* Didn't roll up a combat character with huge physical stats, and run into an ant tunnel on level 2? *splat* Get lucky and find a 5d6 ego weapon on the first floor of the infinite dungeon, and then run into a mimic in the next room? *splat*

Basically, with character generation taking a couple minutes even if I choose "Random" for everything but talents, I'm having a ridiculous amount of toons not get past level 2 or 3, even NOT counting my intentionally suicided halfling barbarians and stuff.. Anyone know a similar game with lower expectations of skill from the players?

I tried out Unangband and was just overwhelmed by the amount of stuff going on, but mostly the weird wall graphics (apparently "random" digits/characters for wall sections just gave me headaches trying to move around,) were just too ugly in a lot of areas, and I got tired of looking at them after a few hours.

Its probably worth point out that ADOM has its own history and is not a variant of Angband...

It's pretty old, and also not a angband variant, but check out Omega.

tome is sorta an angband variant like adom a little, altho it can hardly be called an angband variant anymore. altho i think you might not like the "weird" graphics, similar to un... portralis is a neat variant, not nearly done, that has a bit of a story and such, like adom, altho its unfinished and needs work.

ToME really doesn't have much more in common with ADOM than Zangband does - the similarities pretty much start and end with multiple dungeons that have different colour schemes. Oh, I suppose the wilderness map can *look* a little ADOMish at times.

ToME is a far cry from V, and much bigger, but it still has angband dungeons, monsters, items (tho with added nethackish properties like "fireproof").

I suggest just slowing down a bit with ADOM, seeing as it interests you. Its a difficult (okay, very difficult) game to get to grips with, but its very rewarding. Getting a character starting well is the main hurdle, just try different dungeons, races/classes and tactics until you find something that works for you. Once you clear a couple of areas and build up some power, you'll be hooked.

This thread should really have been in "Idle Chatter", for future reference.

Except ToME *is* an Angband variant and ADOM isn't.

ADOM has its own web forum, but it is horrifically slow and poorly laid out.

Welcome to the Ancient Domains Of Mystery forums. Here you can discuss ADOM and roguelike related subjects as well as anyting else you might be interested in.
