    Steam and O.

I would add sCth as a third favorite if it didn't have annoying problems with unstable code.

The maintainer started on a big, ambitious engine rewrite and it never got out of alpha. After several years. So the old engine is stale, and the new engine never reached a final form so nobody's writing content for it.
One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to bind them.
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness interrupt the movie.

That was in ToME 3 (beta). Town maps are no problem (well, if you know what you're doing ) but there seem to be certain hard-coded limits in the way the overland map works. Basically the PC just ends up walking off the edge of the terminal window .

Ey certainly got me most ooomph but I'm afraid it's as dead as fish, with the author happily publishing papers on linguistics...

Still, it got some nifty features that were not repeated elsewhere yet, like percentile resistances or progressive angel/demon races.

I enjoyed PosBand because I was able to play as a Q and summon things the whole game, which was amazingly satisfying (but easy). It also had the Possessor class which was very difficult for me, but a nice change from the norm.

Ok, I thought the T-Engine would allow customizing this since it is supposed to be quite generic. Maybe it is (was?) planned but has not been done.

Ey is pretty great. As is Un, of course.

I usually bounce between Ey and cTH...or an older version of Z...around 2.4 iirc

with Ey I like the quests..they seem to add a good variety to play

with cTH I like the themes and different towns

and with that version of Z...I like the mutations and such that are available, although the quests are a little too static...

two great reasons why I like Ey...the progressive races are great!

                          UnAngband.

The only things i dislike about it are:

                          1) I cant figure how to set traps.
                          2) Documentation needs a update.
                          3) Tolkien.
                          4) Stat draining monsters appear way too early taking in account the restoration prices.
                          5) Assembly could use some extra pieces.

Minor things, a very good variant imho.

                            Entro, then ToME, then Steamband

Heng would probably be 1a after Entro since Entro is so heavily based off it.

I remember ages ago in ToME there was this guy, Lorddimwit, who was a legend. He was the first person to beat the game on like half the classes, wrote the definitive guide to the game and was very widely respected.

Finally, when work on the new engine started, he started burning out and said he was gonna take a break and recharge his batteries until the new version was ready. That was in 2004, I believe. I assume he's still waiting.

                            Steamband for its flavor.

I'm going to have to say DaJAngband ..naturally because I put what I like in to it and take what I don't like out of it.

http://sites.google.com/site/dajangbandwebsite/home (defunct and so old it's forked from Angband 3.1.0 -I think- but it's probably playable...)
